Ethan Berger’s feature narrative debut is an engrossing contemplation of blind adherence to tradition through the lens of a fictional college fraternity. Tom (Alex Wolff), a passionate ‘brother’ of this fraternity, is charmed by the promises of high social status and alumni connections that open doors. But as a classmate outside of his social circle named Annabelle (Halle Bailey) enters his life, his devotion begins to falter. Once the scheduled hazing of new fraternity members comes to a disturbing head, Tom is faced with the decision of a lifetime.

The shocking side of privilege

"I'm a massive fan of all of the college and university movies that go back years, including National Lampoon's Animal House, breakfast club and anything else imbetween. The Line is a terrific and disturbing insight into the spoils of privileged youth. Great acting, location and cinematography throughout in a film which is an important addition. I first watched it on Sky movies but was delighted to see Vinegar Syndrome had a physical media version. Watch this movie, it has an important point to make. It stays with you long after it's initial viewing. I'm a delighted owner from England."

Mediocre Indie Unpleasantness

"A well-enough made but deeply unpleasant film about a middle-class college kid lured by the promise of status and future wealth into a preeminent fraternity whose brothers are out-of-control, ultimately leading to a hazing incident that throws his life into turmoil. I know it's the whole point, but the characters are so insufferable in their party-animal ways, toxic masculinity, racism, homophobia, and entitled privilege that it just makes the whole film difficult to endure. Plus, the story is so on-the-nose with what you may have imagined is behind these news stories on hazing-gone-awry that it seems to lack imagination. The outsider coming into an elite organization, the best friend who is a mama's boy with a silver spoon in his mouth, the disapproving girlfriend, the gatekeeping fraternity brother who entrusts our protagonist with responsibility, the tragedy during Pledge Week. . . it's all a bit too pat and predictable. The direction is assured for a first-time feature director, though, in that artificial indie way, anyway. Just the writing and the onslaught of badly-behaved assholes obscures it. It's also guilty of parading faded stars in tiny roles to give it some cred -- John Malkovich, Denise Richards, Cheri Oteri -- which ultimately adds nothing much. Shit, the frat guys aren't even good-looking, so couldn't enjoy it on that level, either. I guess it's fine for what it is, but it's nothing I'll ever return to, and I don't feel particularly enriched for having seen it."

The Horror of College Hazing

"Extremely good film. Hits home when it comes to hazing in college and the abuses that come with it. I caught this on streaming and really took a liking to the film. As soon as I saw this being released through a partner label, I had to have it. Nice add to my collection."

Eric B. (5/5)

A fun enough little movie

"A fun enough little movie about the life of a frat house, but this one didn't really seem to do much for me. felt like a movie i had already seen done before."
