From below the earth to the stars, The Great Basin is a documentary feature that builds a complex panorama of rural Nevada, in the Western United States, through a tapestry of characters who work, live, and play there. The Great Basin is the location of the "Loneliest Road in America" and can be seen as a microcosm of the economic, social, and ecological marginalization of 21st-century rural communities.

A Meditative Journey Through Landscape and Isolation
"The Great Basin is a slow, contemplative film that emphasizes place, atmosphere, and human reflection over traditional plot. Set against the vast, stark landscapes of the American West, the film explores themes of isolation, connection, and the quiet rhythms of daily life. Cinematography is a highlight, capturing sweeping vistas and subtle details with care, creating a visual meditation on space and solitude. The pacing is deliberately measured, encouraging viewers to engage with both the environment and the inner lives of the characters. For those who appreciate contemplative cinema and immersive environmental storytelling, The Great Basin offers a reflective, quietly powerful viewing experience."

Middle of nowhere
"A very slow paced documentary about lives about small town people in the middle of nowhere. It's interesting one but not to be watched when you are tired."
— Markus K. (3/5)
Fascinating Corner
"Enjoyed this immensely. Great transfer, lovely slipcover"
— james s. (5/5)
A fascinating, unconventional documentary
"This documentary about one of the most isolated communities in North America is as much a political study as it is an anthropological look at a people. To wit: so many of the people we see deny climate change and Covid, and we realize the importance of connection: they don’t believe these things because they’re so isolated, surrounded by beautiful scenery and little news."
— Joshua K. (5/5)
Interesting
"Really interesting feature"
— Casey J. (5/5)
A quiet, haunting portrait of a place and its ghosts
"Not a conventional documentary — more like a slow, observational drift through a region in decline. The film trusts silence and space, and the result is strangely affecting."
— Thomas L. (4/5)
