From arthouse to Canuxploitation, Canadian International Pictures (CIP) is devoted to resurrecting vital, distinctive, and overlooked triumphs of Canadian cinema. This label is focused on the country’s original cinematic boom years – spanning the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s – occasionally venturing past that period (and the country’s borders) to highlight the films of Canada’s most inspired actors and filmmakers. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing CIP's brand new line of home video releases!

40th anniversary special edition!

As the Christmas holidays begin, a group of 10 war-obsessed kids have a wave of inspiration: What if they spend the next two weeks engaged in a simulated war, armed only with shields, wooden swords, snowballs, and a fierce sense of competition? With a bounty chest waiting for the winners, the two sides gradually grow in size, and the war grows in importance, taking over all aspects of their lives. But the sense of fun and excitement soon turns to something far darker, culminating in a tragic event that ensures this war will never be forgotten.

One of Canada’s most beloved and unusual family films, Andre Melançon’s The Dog Who Stopped the War launched Tales for All, the career-spanning series that made producer Rock Demers (The Peanut Butter Solution) a legend. Featuring battle sequences both playful and harrowing, this film brings the imaginative world of children vividly to life with a genre movie sense of urgency, thanks in part to the memorable synth score by Germain Gauthier (Pinball Summer). Recalling the kid-centric world of Charlie Brown while anticipating the mischief and melancholy of Home Alone, The Dog Who Stopped the War is festive family filmmaking at its best.

Classic Canadian family movie

"All time classic Canadian kid's winter movie! This is a true gem. The Vinegar Syndrome edition has a really good picture and sound quality. Also feature both theatrical and extended version in both dubbed English or original Quebecois language track. Excellent slipcover packaging. A great family movie."

Istvan K. (5/5)

A Beloved Kids Film on Blu ray

"Vinegar Syndrome’s Blu ray of The Dog Who Stopped the War gives this gentle cult childhood classic the care it deserves. The restoration is clean and vibrant, preserving its snowy textures and warmth. Extras provide useful context, making this a welcome rediscovery for nostalgia and first time viewers alike."

Tristin B. (5/5)

Millennial Canadian Cult Classic

"What an incredibly odd, quirky Canadian children's film with a surprisingly mature and sobering message. It must be seen to be believed."

Zakaria S. (5/5)

Outstanding Canadian Classic

"I saw this film on cable TV is my youth and was delighted to see this release from CIP. The restoration is fantastic, with the rich, vibrant colours of the children’s snowsuits juxtaposed with the stark whites of the wintery small town Quebec snow. This is packed with awesome extras including commentary, extended cuts in both French and English, and entirely separate disc of more extras. I’m looking forward to diving deeper and learning more about this Canadian children’s Classic. Then performances of the children is really strong and the way it portrays the snow fort and play-warfare is outstanding."

Matthew W. (5/5)

Bundle if you can

"Got this in a bundle with two others from the same director and they’re well worth it if you’re on the level of the films."

Keith M. (5/5)

An 80’s Canadian Christmas

"You are probably considering this title for one of 2 reasons. You saw this on TV in Canada as a child or you happened upon The Peanut Butter solution and decided to continue down the rabbit hole. The Dog Who Stopped The War is another one of those oddly high stakes Canadian kids made for TV features. I don’t think I have ever seen a movie that more successfully captures the feeling of playing outside as a kid. Our story concerns an ongoing “war” between 2 groups of very colorfully attired children with amazing snow fort making abilities. There is drama, betrayal, LOTR inspired battles and a lot of snowballs. Such a weird raw French Canadian kids movie. I think it was good, not like The Goonies or anything…. It was just so… authentic."

Fun family Christmas

"CPI always kills it. This is fun, looks great and some cool artwork too. A very cool release worth watching with the whole family"

Joseph K. (5/5)

Canuck classic for the kids!

"A Canadian Winter classic for the kids! A pure childlike look into the world of youth and fantasy. Excellent film! Plentiful with extras to watch on the second disc."

Allan R. (5/5)
