A sharp-eyed satire set on a sugar plantation on an Indonesian island in the final years of the Dutch colonial era, Ena Sendijarević’s (Take Me Somewhere Nice) second feature is a potent reminder that European colonialism did not come to a tidy ending in the innumerable countries it affected (to say nothing of the neocolonialism still impacting much of the globe). Instead, Sweet Dreams provides compelling evidence of the mess these wider historical forces make in the lives of the characters within the volatile microcosm the director portrays so vividly.

For the family and business led by the imperious patriarch Jan (Hans Dagelet), the rot had clearly set in long before these events. That said, Jan isn’t around to see the changes to come, what with his sudden death after one of his nightly visits to the room of Siti (Hayati Azis), his Indonesian housekeeper. With the disorder in the household further compounded by a workers’ protest, his widow Agathe (Locarno winner Renée Soutendijk) demands the return from Europe of Jan’s pompous son Cornelius (Florian Myjer) and heavily pregnant daughter-in-law Josefin (Lisa Zweerman). When they all learn of Jan’s decision to bequeath his estate to his son with Siti, the ensuing power struggles add a further degree of turbulence.

Realizing the promise she displayed in her first feature Take Me Somewhere Nice, Sendijarević delivers a film that’s remarkable for its ruthless intelligence, visual flair, and astute take on the ways personal relationships can be poisoned by the systems and structures in which we operate.

Existential lullaby

"Big fan of period pieces. This one takes place around 1900. Gorgeous cinematography with great direction and acting. Unique sound design with interesting synth/organ. The production design is so detailed it is perfect for repeated viewings. Every character on the plantation is lost in their own private hell. Love the lullaby style music during scenes where the characters are inwardly suffering. After watching this I thought of all the characters and wondered if I had sympathy for any of them? Upon a second viewing I realized the only character I cared about was the reverend. The only one with some common sense. Sadly he wasn't the focus. The slipcover looks like the movie is about a wedding yet it is really about a funeral. I like the design and font yet I don't think it captures the dark essence of the movie. Comes with a nice thick essay booklet."

An Examination of Greed

"This movie was an indictment of colonialism and the divide between classes in society. The cinematography is beautiful as many of the shots look like paintings. There are some scenes that seem a little surreal and there is even some dark comedy. Sometimes it seemed like the director may have been influenced a little by Wes Anderson. The story follows a family who owns a sugar plantation and try to sell it once the patriarch dies. As the story progresses, we see the depths of depravity people will go to as they sell their souls for money as it leadsvto a tragic ending. This was another blind buy for me, and I was not disappointed."

Fever Dream Drama

"This movie is pretty fascinating, touches on classism and racism in Dutch-occupied Indonesia. And what a mother will do for her child. It’s very moving. Recommended."

One of my recent faves!

"One of my favorite films from last year, and I’m thrilled to see it on blu ray! Darkly funny and some really terrific production design and cinematography. Just purchased Sendijarević’s first film for Partners Only Month because I enjoyed this so much. Also love how much the color of the slip pops. Make sure to grab yours while you can and check it out!"
