NUTS! recounts the unbelievable true story of John Romulus Brinkley, a Kansas doctor who in 1917 discovered that he could cure impotence by transplanting goat testicles into men. From there, the story only gets more bizarre.
Mixing hand-drawn animated reenactments, interviews, and archival footage, NUTS! traces Brinkley’s rise from poverty and obscurity to the heights of celebrity, wealth, and influence.
Filmmaker Penny Lane (HAIL SATAN?) has skillfully borrowed a page from her subject - charming viewers into believing the unbelievable, building their trust and excitement, until the final chapter bares the painful truth and reveals the doctor for what he truly was…

"The animation is quite original and beautiful which complements the insane real life story this documentary tells. I guess some doctors really are nuts"
"Movie: A _wild_ story, well told, that kept surprising me. It ends up touching on a lot more than just one doctor grafting goat testicles. The animation is consistently well done, and on a rewatch I'd love to focus more on how it changes from chapter to chapter, since I didn't realize at first each section had a different animation director. Extras: The home movies are pretty short and without sound. So is "Rejuvenation Through Gland Transplantation". Making A Record, on the other hand, is fearure length with near-constant narration by Brinkley himself. Book: Just a bunch of fake (?) old-timey ads really. Packaging: Amazing slipcover. No notes. Inner cover is also nice."
"As America continues to move backwards to a time of medical charlatanism, it’s somewhat encouraging to know that we’ve been through this before and that the passage of time can make most anything funny. Definitely try to pick this one up before it goes out of print."
"There are a quite a few labels that put out quality material on VS, but one I will always trust in Cartuna - especially after they put out Hundreds of Beavers. I grabbed this as a blind buy, because it the cover art has a cool style and I figured it had to be interesting"
"Fun little documentary with great animation and big balls."
"It took quite a bit of explaining to the arresting officer that this was just a documentary and not something weird. I wonder what Penny will do with the rest of her career?"
"Nice release. Bizarre documentary. Weird topic. Nice art style"
"Now I need to track down the book."
"Great!"
"so fun, awesome packaging and features!"
