Named after Yasujiro Ozu’s custom-made, tatami-level, crab-like tripod, Kani is a new home video label dedicated to leveling the gaze and furthering the understanding of Asian cinema in North America. Focused on genre-defying films, Kani aims to expand the canon, bolster up-and-coming filmmakers and reintroduce repertory classics in context. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

Following her parent's separation, 10 year-old Marbles is sent to live with her grandmother in the outskirts of Hong Kong. Also new to town is the seductive pageant queen Rita (Cherie Chung) whose skin-tight leotards pique the interest of a dashing postman (Kent Tong) already involved with the shopkeeper's wife, Lin (Elaine Jin). Meanwhile, the curious Marbles, who has made it a habit of spying on her neighbours with her binoculars, witnesses a murder on a stormy night. A ragtag team of kid detectives comes together. Who is the killer? Where is the body?

Angie Chen, the first female director at Shaw Brothers Studio, began her career with a rich and unclassifiable ensemble film: part comedy of manners à la Shaw, part Nancy Drew-esque nod to Hitchcock’s Rear Window — all of which was marketed by the studio as an erotic whodunnit. Chen's film unfolds as all these things and more: a self-aware portrait of a small-town mentality and community, fore-fronting the interconnected lives of women whose tenacity would become a major theme of Chen's work, developed further in My Name Ain’t Suzie (1985).

It’s like a Lifetime Movie of the Week, but actually good

"From the few that I’ve seen, Kani seems to knock their releases out of the park. This was absolutely gorgeous. I never really feel like I need to rewatch a movie immediately after finishing one, but I may have to with this. It’s like I’m a kid and I recorded over parts of a kids movie with something I thought was hot on the free weekend of Cinemax."

          Shaw Bros Murder Mystery

"This is the first Shaw Bros. produced film to be directed by a woman (shout out to Angie Chen) and it's a real doosie. Mixing a little bit of giallo/Hitchcock with some 80s eroticism, child misadventures and touches of comedy, this tale about a young girl who witnesses the murder of a beautiful woman is a real treat and not something I'd expect from a studio that is known in the west for producing tons of martial arts films. The disc features a lengthy interview with its director, a short film and it comes with a booklet. What a treat!"

          Trent S. (4/5)

An interesting one if you are into Shaw/HK movies.

"A little all over the place but never loses your attention and it's incredibly unique. Maybe not for everyone but it is for me. Also that slipcover and case art, wow."

          Emilio M. (5/5)

Great Change of Pace for Shaw Fans

"A fun, albeit sometimes messy, Shaw Bros sexy thriller/comedy? Kind of neither. Kind of both."

          Nick C. (4/5)

          It is

          "Loved this blind buy"

          Kevin G. (5/5)

Cherie Chung was amazing in the movie

"The scan from Kano releasing was amazing Cherie Chung charm in movie was seductive just a great thriller."

          Jason G. (5/5)

          What Marble saw

"Fasten your seatbelt. For Maybe It's Love will inundate you with enough stories to last you 'til next month. Beginning with a married couple, fighting over money, with the man storming out, all in front of the young daughter that he could care less about. The young girl is shipped off to live with her grandma. The girl spies on neighbors across the yard, who seem to be fighting also. Cut to a mail order bride living in misery with her controlling hubby, who crushes deeply for the hunky mail man at the door. And, they have an affair. Cut to the rich beauty (stunningly sexy Cherie Chung, seen gracing the alternate cover art) living up on the hill that the postman then has an affair with as well. The postman is married by the way. Back on the binoculars, the young girl's married man that is seemingly abusing his wife, is running around with a male lover. Are you getting all this? Cut to jilted mail order bride confronting rich girl, demanding mucho denaro. Maybe It's Love is a plateful. With children investigating missing persons and a murder in the same movie as some very hot and saucy love making and, as I say, you are in for a full course meal. Maybe It's Love?, I don't know. You'll have to see for yourself."

          Paul B. (3/5)

          Maybe It's Love

"A bit less of a thriller than I was expecting, but it's still very charming and well made."

          Peter V. (4/5)

          Thanks Kani

"Kani is probably my favorite partner label. Glad the put this out."

An Interesting Late Shaw Brothers Drama

"I liked how the town in this film feels so real and that all the characters feel connected. The interview with the director was great and gave a lot of background on how the film came to be and her inspirations."
