After a few idiosyncratic short films Horvat gave the world a concentrated dose of her meta-madness in I Blame Society, a film that destroys itself and its benefactors as it goes on. Horvat plays a funhouse version of herself, a terminally plugged-in creator looking to finally make the leap to the big time. With an atta boy from clueless moneymen, Gillian starts documenting her process of squaring up accounts with ex-boyfriends, old enemies, and innocent bystanders alike. “Authentic in more ways than one,” as Gillian herself says, I Blame Society is among the most pointed and dryly hysterical looks at the world of branding, buzzwords, and social media’s indemnification against serial selfishness. A true original, shot guerrilla style and with a cast and crew of friends, I Blame Society is a messy open casket funeral for the independent American cinema of the 2000s.

A feminist Man Bites Dog but make it mumblecore
"All dressed up in a beautifully designed, Barbara Kruger-referencing slip, Gillian Wallace Horvat's breakout first feature has never looked better. By turns riotously funny and blackly effed up, Wallace Horvat fearlessly plays her self as a psychopathic Strong Female Lead (If you know, you know). Two of her well received short films along with a sweet introduction by mentor and Heathers scribe Daniel Waters in the booklet. Less sweet is another essay by Vicky Osterland who spending a baffling percentage of her word count trashing Emerald Fenell's Promising Young Woman, my only real complaint."

"I had my eye on this one for a bit and decided to grab it when it was on sale. Interesting premise and director/star Gillian Wallace Horvat really goes for it. . . unfortunately it ended up with a mixed review from me. Definitely worth checking out, esp if on sale, but overall it just didn't land for me."
