How to Build a Time Machine follows two men as they set out on a journey to build their own time machines. Rob Niosi is a stop motion animator who has spent the last 13 years obsessively constructing a full-scale replica of the time machine prop from the 1960 adaptation of H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine." It's his attempt to recapture the memory of seeing the film in theaters with his father. Dr.Ron Mallett is a theoretical physicist whose story begins with a tragedy. He was only 10 years old when his father died suddenly of a heart attack. Distraught, he sought solace in science-fiction. After reading "The Time Machine," Ron dedicated his life to studying physics. He has since become a professor at the University of Connecticut and is now working on building a real time machine in the hopes that he might go back in time to save his father's life.

"Really nice doc, wasn’t sure what to expect but will be keeping this in the collection and hope to rewatch soon"
"Maybe aome bias because The Time Machine is one of my all time favorite movies, but I couldn't be happier with this doc. The creation of the replica is such a cool passion project and watching some of the process was really interesting. I also enjoyed the second storyline, a physicist who researches black holes in order to pursue his own time travel interests. Highly recommended."
"A thoughtful, gentle doc about two men obsessed with revisiting the past. One through painstakingly recreating a film prop, the other chasing actual theories of time travel. Bittersweet and passion-fueled."
"Movie: Surprisingly good at blending the two main threads (which at first seem only superficially related) into a compelling meditation on the nature of time. Lots of visual prettiness as well. Extras: Very enjoyable seeing the extra details, e. g. in the time machine and other inventions. Book: Even more little details, and the front and back look nice. Packaging: Pretty good design overall."
"Fascinating look at two men inspired by seeing the 1960 Time Machine and their obssessions - one to recreate the prop from the film down to the smallest detail and one to go into the field of science to try to actually make a working time travelling machine"
"I'm a long time listener of the Film Junk Podcast, which director Jay Cheel is a founder of and has been co-hosting for about two decades. I really enjoyed his first full length documentary titled "Beauty Day" and I enjoyed "How To Build A Time Machine" as well. This one tells two time machine related stories, one about a guy building a replica time machine from the original movie and the other about a theoretical physicist. The audio and video are top notch and the package includes a great slipcover. If you like documentaries, science fiction, science, the original "The Time Machine" movie, or the Film Junk Podcast, than I highly recommend."
"Really liked this documentary. I purchased the limited edition with the slipcover but, as with all my slipcovers, it now lives in the closet under my staircase so is absent from my picture."
"Enjoyed this documentary, interesting subjects. Great slipcover."
"This ethereal documentary WILL make you believe in time travel. You want this guy to reconnect with his father. You want him to travel in time and find him and give his dad a hug again. I have to ding the movie one star for not actually including instructions on how to build a Time Machine (Kidding! But one demerit for never even MENTIONING the name of the man who designed George Pal’s original time machine!). It’s still heartwarming and moving adventure throughout, and a love letter to the art direction of the original time machine design. And to time itself."
"A truly interesting look at a unique group of people following their passion."
