The legend of Frankenstein gets a provocative modern update in the stylishly disturbing new film from indie horror master Larry Fessenden. Suffering from PTSD following his stint as an army medic, Henry (David Call) now works feverishly in his Brooklyn laboratory to forget the death he witnessed overseas by creating life in the form of a man cobbled together from body parts. After procuring a brain from an unwitting victim, his creation—Adam (Alex Breaux)—is born. But it soon seems that giving life to Adam was the easy part; teaching him how to live in a dark and troubled world may be perilous. A complex, emotionally shattering tale about what it means to be human, Depraved brings Mary Shelley’s immortal fable fully into the 21st century.

Reviews

Excellent 4K Presentation

"A strong release with an impressive 4K presentation and a great overall package. The film has a stylish look and a memorable atmosphere, and the transfer brings out plenty of detail while keeping the original feel intact. A very worthwhile collector’s edition."

Thomas L. (5/5)

An outstanding video release for this modern reinterpretation of Frankenstein

"Fessenden’s modern reinterpretation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, focusing on a war veteran who creates a man from body parts in a Brooklyn loft, leading to a philosophical and tragic story about identity, memory, and morality. The film itself is a thoughtful, low-budget indie horror drama rather than a traditional monster movie, emphasizing character and themes over action, and it’s often considered one of Fessenden’s stronger later films. The 4K UHD release features a new restoration from the original camera negative with HDR/Dolby Vision and looks terrific on the home's screen. A large set of extras including commentaries, interviews, and a feature-length making-of documentary, plus a well-appointed booklet complete an outstanding video release."

The Frankenstein we deserved

"Larry Fessenden’s Depraved is a contemporary take on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, set in modern-day Brooklyn. The film follows Henry, a former military surgeon struggling with PTSD, who attempts to create life by assembling a man from parts in his loft. As his experiment progresses, he faces the moral and emotional consequences of playing god. It blends psychological tension with horror, marking another distinctive entry in Fessenden’s long career in indie horror filmmaking. In 2025, IFC released Depraved in a 4K Ultra HD edition, giving the film a high-definition home video presentation with HDR support. The set includes both the 4K disc and a standard Blu-ray, along with bonus features like behind-the-scenes footage and audio commentaries that delve into the creative process behind the film. This release provides fans and collectors a definitive way to experience Fessenden’s modern Frankenstein story, showcasing the film’s dark, gritty atmosphere and his signature mix of character-driven drama and horror."

Fessenden's Frankenstein

"I really enjoyed this modern take on Frankenstein. There were enough changes to the story that it didn't feel like a rinse and repeat of the source material."

Sean J. (4/5)

Fessenden Done Did It Again

"Larry Fessenden is a genius. A true NYC filmmaker genius. He knows how to work within limits, and has been consistently putting out and helping to put out and produce horror films for decades. Depraved, who's writing credits are for Mary Shelley and Larry Fessenden, is a modern take on Frankenstein, but you most likely already know that. I refuse to give anything away, but if you're already a Fessenden fan, adding this one to the collection is a no brainer, a solid entry into his portfolio. If you're unfamiliar with Larry Fessenden, not only is he a icon in the horror film world, he's also worked along side such greats as Martin Scorsese, Jim Jarmusch, Kelly Reichardt and, Steve Buscemi, he's also headed and operated Glass Eye Pix since 1985, which continues to release fierce independent projects. The entire presentation here is excellent. The audio and video quality are fantastic, and there's a whole slew of sweet extras for all of us nerd cinephiles. 10/10"

Fresh take

"Like his Vampire film , Fessenden takes something fantastical and grounds it in the real world . I hear he’s going to do a monster mash-up that’s sounds cool."

Bruce K. (4/5)

"Atmosphere aplenty awaits any viewer daring enough to check out this horror flick. A stunning presentation garuntees that you’ll never see this film look better."

Mark H. (5/5)

Fessenden 4K upgrade!

"So glad that this got a 4K release before I shelled out for its previous Blu Ray incarnation. As fans of Larry Fessenden will know, atmosphere reigns in his films and such is the case with this modern update of the Frankenstein story. As always with VS releases, the quality and selection of extras is great here, making this another unmissable disc."
