Utopia is a film acquisitions, sales, and technology company with a ‘filmmaker first’ approach. Utopia focuses on creating new revenue and monetization opportunities, improving the direct-to-consumer experience, and helping filmmakers maintain a global presence. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing Utopia's brand new line of home video releases!

In a world that undulates between the digital and physical, a group of SoundCloud rappers live a solitary, post-societal existence in the desert town of Crestone, Colorado. Once a religious and spiritual mecca for many, Crestone’s endless sand dunes, waterfalls, and dark caves act as a backdrop for images of tattooed bodies, cosplay wardrobes, and clouds of weed smoke. When an old friend from high school visits the rappers to shoot music videos and document their day-to-day, reality and fiction begin to blur. A rapidly spreading wildfire sends everyone into varying states of emergency. Technology begins to fail. A man on an electric bicycle appears with a warning of the end times. Are the last people alive a group of SoundCloud rappers, smoking weed, and making music for nobody?

CRESTONE explores the hidden aspects of collaboration and friendship, as well as the human desire to persist against all odds. What does music sound like if there is no one left to repost and share it? Marnie Ellen Hertzler's feature debut is a time capsule of how separation and connection intertwine in the digital age.

Aimless, but entertaining

"A fun feax-documentary (mockumentary?) with some fantastic backing music from Animal Collective. Great packaging and art for this release too."

Bought it for the soundtrack.

"It's no ODDSAC, but I'll always snag a flick with an Animal Collective soundtrack."

JOHN F. (4/5)

Unknown Excellence

"This movie never would have come across my radar if it weren't for the Animal Collective score, but I'm glad it did. Such a fascinating, small story of a menagerie in the Colorado desert. When I stumbled upon a physical copy at the Vinegar Syndrome store, I was incredibly surprised and I just had to get it!"

Robert M. (5/5)

Outsiders

"Interesting movie/pseudo documentary revolving around a group of sound cloud rappers living in the desert. Entertaining and contemplative at times"

Colin H. (4/5)

Interesting & fun mocumentary

"I really enjoyed it and am glad to own it. It takes some interesting turns and blends reality with fiction in fun ways. Highly recommend"

Nicholas V. (5/5)

Surprisingly effective

"Documentary/scripted hybrid that gets pretty experimental at times. I don’t really care for the soundcloud rap scene, nor the rappers in this film and what they seem to stand for, but the film is a great experimental watch. Watch high and with headphones!"

Jeffrey W. (5/5)

"Awesome"
