For Jimmy Lee Lindsay, known to his fans and detractors as Jay Reatard, life was a race against time. After growing up fast among Memphis crack addicts, he managed to blaze a path through the rough-and-tumble underground rock scene of the early aughts, releasing over 100 singles, EPs and full-length records in fourteen years.  Then on January 13, 2010, not yet 30, he died.

With their feature documentary Better Than Something, filmmakers Alex Hammond and Ian Markiewicz let Jay tell his own story: a poverty-stricken childhood, teen years spent as a two-fisted tunesmith battling fans and band mates alike, and a short-lived adulthood of focused and relentless productivity.

Jay said "I just try to make as much as I can with the time that I have." By any measure, that is exactly what he did.  Better Than Something is both a testament to Jay Reatard's indisputable legacy and a tribute to his vital, thrilling, and all-too-brief life.

Hammer, I Miss you

"Damn, damn, damn. Beautiful release of a moving documentary, packed with special features. I can't recommend it enough. For fans of Jay, and for those unfamiliar. Jay was like atomic energy squeezed into a human frame, and I was so excited to see this release get the care it deserves. Kudos to those involved. RIP Jay Reatard"

John D. (5/5)

Ryan D. (5/5)

Great release, highly recommended!

"For Jimmy Lee Lindsay, life was a mosh pit. Whether it was growing up among crack addicts on the rough side of Memphis, or his years in the rough-and-tumble underground rock scene of the '00s, the man the world came to know as Jay Reatard always had to fight in order to create, to grow, to live, to rise above."

Sebastian V. (5/5)

Better than the DVD but not by a ton but still rad

"I’m a massive Jay fan so this was must snag. I must admit I was slightly disappointed that it wasn’t jacked up with more unseen extras and even the booklet contains stories that I’ve already read but I’m an obsesso on Jay and there’s not much to that hasn’t already been said or done. The movie was hard to track down as it was part of the soundtrack vinyl only this is a welcome and official release. Hope more people get to see it as a result!"

Adam V. (5/5)

For all punk rock fans

"Big Jay Reatard fan. Nearly all his music is fantastic. Seen this documentary a few times, very entertaining. He was a very talented dude. Kevin the Ghost approved."

Kevin D. (5/5)

Gone Too Soon

"Better Than Something: Jay Reatard is a raw and intimate portrait of the late punk rock icon, capturing both his creative genius and turbulent personality. Through candid interviews, rare footage, and live performances, the documentary offers an unfiltered glimpse into Jay’s life and the relentless drive behind his music. It’s both a celebration of his talent and a sobering reflection on the struggles that came with it. Fans and newcomers alike will find this film a powerful tribute to an artist who burned brightly and left an indelible mark on the punk scene."
