Reviews

A good Wingard film

"Autoerotic is a dry, lightly provocative anthology about four Chicago couples exploring sexual frustration and self‑pleasure, delivered with the deadpan tone typical of Joe Swanberg and Adam Wingard. While some critics appreciate its quietly comedic, R‑rated O. Henry–style vignettes, many find it uneven, underacted, and only sporadically funny"

Very nice!

"Really liked the movie, and this was a great release. I've enjoyed a fair amount of Joe Swanberg stuff. I think Kate Lyn Sheil is one of the most underrated actresses there is. Her and Amy Seimetz were both funny in this. And I especially liked that Swanberg put an actual pregnant woman in the movie for a sex scene. I thought she looked pretty hot, and she had to be brave. Special features are good with the commentary track and the booklet."

An Intimate and Provocative Exploration of Desire

"Autoerotic is a short, provocative drama that examines the complexities of sexual identity, personal desire, and self-exploration. The film is minimalistic in both narrative and setting, focusing closely on the internal experiences of its protagonist. The strength of the piece lies in its subtlety and honesty. Performances are understated, emphasizing vulnerability and authenticity over melodrama. Cinematography is intimate, using close framing and careful lighting to reflect the character’s emotional and psychological states. For viewers interested in nuanced, character-focused explorations of sexuality and personal discovery, Autoerotic offers a compelling, thought-provoking experience."

Thomas H. (5/5)

Masterpiece!

"While a little rough arpund the edges at times, autoerotic is a delightful mix of body horror, satire, & parody draped in realism. There are 4 stories, each one more entertaining than the last dealing w/ 4 partbers/expartners. I'm a huge fan of the first story but thr last one & the 2nd one had me in stichws. The 3rd is good too, it just has the weakest acting. Overall 4/5."

Zadeh G. (4/5)

Great disc, great commentary

"Great disc of a wild flick, but the jewel in the crown is the commentary track with Swanberg and Wingard. They really get into the weeds of 2010s low budg’ filmmaking and being broke and desperate and excited. Love that stuff."

Jacob J. (5/5)

Autoerotic

"Great artwork. Fascinating mumblecore. A fan of Mr Swanberg."

Hansi L. (5/5)

Great comedy with familiar faces

"Adam Wingard shines in this erotic anthology comedy. The newly commissioned artwork looks great and captures the mood very well. Great restoration with some familiar faces from Ti West and Adam Wingard's filmography."

Dennis K. (5/5)

More Kate Lyn Sheil, please!

"I am the world's biggest Kate Lyn Sheil fan. The queen of mumblecore and of the indie film scene in the 2010s. Her films are never released here in the UK, so I'm so thankful whenever a VS sub-label puts these out. To me they are like gold dust and I order immediately, so naturally happy with this, despite being a lesser work. I'll use this space to say Factory 25 needs to give us the grandaddy of them all, Sun Don't Shine, and I'm really hopeful Utopia will find a home for Materna on disc. More Kate Lyn Sheil, please!"

Timothy E. (3/5)

Autoerotic

"Actually funny!"

Marko L. (5/5)
