I love being surprised.
"Being a fan of anything related to UK race culture, I snatched this up during Partners Only month. It was down to 10 LE copies and ended up being further proof that my best blind buys are always the least costly. Beats is a both a party movie and a coming of age story. With that premise, there are many opportunities to coast on cliche. That doesn't happen here. Director Brian Welsh and writer Kieran Hurley supply you plenty of adrenaline for the dancefloor and then cushion the fall with a post-euphoria cathartic cry. I had quite a few expectations going in but was surprised to find “beautiful” in my post-movie word cloud. This a gem of a release from Music Box. The sold out slip is wonderfully lo-fi, looking like a worn flyer from last night's party. Extras are slight (Director/writer AC, a making-of doc, still gallery, and trailer) but that's a minor complaint for a great film that looks great on Blu. It moves your heart as well as your feet."
