After a group of thieves decide to ransack the home of a strange, old Gypsy woman, murdering her in the process, they unwittingly free a vengeful genie named Jinn who has been held captive for centuries in an ancient oil lamp. Soon after, the lamp is acquired by a local museum. But as Alex Wallace, daughter of the museum's curator, decides to sneak a group of her friends into the museum after hours for a night of partying, she doesn't realize that Jinn is looking for a new 'keeper' and that Alex is the perfect vessel to carry out the genie's diabolical actions...

Primed with an assortment of gruesome deaths and a very dark sense of humor, Tom Daley's THE LAMP (aka THE OUTING) is a wild, Texas lensed, mid 80s supernatural horror gem. Starring Deborah Winters (Kotch), James Huston (Ray, Powder), and featuring the voice of cult actor Jackson Bostwick (TV's Shazam, The Prey) as the voice of murderous genie, Jinn, Vinegar Syndrome is delighted to resurrect THE LAMP on Blu-ray, featuring a brand new 2K restoration of a never-on-video, 92 min cut, and an extended making-of documentary featuring new interviews with its cast and crew, thus finally allowing the incredible story of its production to be told!

Reviews

Fun Premise

"3. 5 stars. The plot of an evil djinn run amok in a museum is great, and I love how it references at-the-time current pop culture, such as Guess Jeans and Indiana Jones. Dumb, but fun."

Lucas B. (3/5)

Charming and fun horror flick!!

"This was an awesome purchase. Another great blind buy that I got just by watching some reviews and fell in love with it. This is a fantastic and over the top film that was made with a lot of love. As always, the VinSyn extras are always beautifully delivered. Get one for you!!"

GILBERTO C. (5/5)

Museum Field Trip Gone Wrong

"An ok film offering a unique take on the Djinn legend. It begins promising but loses momentum toward the end. It’s always good to see a movie produced in Houston. The restoration is impressive."

Noel H. (4/5)

The movie was a fun

"The movie was a fun watch, this was the kind of movie i used to rent from the video stores."

The only thing I want is more Genie.

"Synopsis: In 1893 a mysterious boat washes up in Galveston Texas with only one survivor, a little girl, a lamp and a mystical bracelet. Present day (1987) a group of thugs murder the aged sole survivor of that incident in a home invasion only to get slaughtered when the lead punk rubs THE LAMP. After the crime scene is cleaned up the relic is given to the head of the local museum Dr Wallace, whose daughter Alex puts the bracelet on her wrist. Unable to get the bracelet off Alex becomes controlled by the lamp and finds a way for her friends to come to the museum after hours for an overnight adventure. THE OUTING quickly turns disastrous as the genie in the lamp escapes and starts killing Alex's friends in grotesque ways. Review: The kills were great in this and I like the supernatural twist to your typical "teens trapped in the department store/mall/museum" movie. The genie looked cool but we didn't get to see it enough. It's not Jaws. You made the monster now let's see it! Movies that span over the course of 100 years are usually overly thought out and this is no exception. Carnage Count 3/5 Sleaze Score 3/5"

Houston horror

"Cool regional slasher out of Houston (which they are not shy about haha). Very fun watch with cool effects, and a banger slipcover from Earl Hess!"

The Lamp

"If scary movies are supposed to have morals than the lesson taught by this movie is "Be careful what you wish for". Okay, forget the fact that all the "teens" in this movie look too old even for grad school and concentrate on the plot. A girl (Andra St. Ivanyi) has an argument with her father and wishes he were dead. So what? Well dad is a museum curator and he just happened to come into possession of a real magic lamp ("from Iraq") and whoever, or whatever, is inside heard her wish. This isn't one of those nice "Your wish is my command, O Master" sort of djinn's; he has a mean streak a mile wide. When the same girl and her friends decide to spend the night in the museum for a little carnal fun he pops up and starts killing everyone in various exotic ways. Watch for a boy snapped in half at the waist and dead snakes brought back to life to deliver poisonous bites. They had to save the budget for the big FX at the end so we just get to see the aftermath of the really gory stuff. The snake bites and impalements are all shown though. So is this a good movie? Yeah, I thought so. The ending left me wondering though . . . I mean it is kind of inconclusive. What DID that shot of the Pepsi truck mean? Well, maybe I will just have to see it again."
