This listing is for the standard edition Blu-ray. The limited edition slipcover (designed by Richard Hilliard) was limited to 4,000 units and is sold out. The two versions are identical, aside from the slipcover.

Richard is a college student who has decided to focus his attention on the study of fear and has invited a group of friends up to his family's secluded mountain cabin for the weekend, during which they've agreed to participate in his project and share what terrifies them. While the experiment seems harmless at first, when it comes time for Richard to reveal what he's afraid of, the answer comes in the form of a strange, lifelike, wooden carving of a man which has been in the cabin for generations and is named Morty. As the friends attempt to enjoy their wilderness seclusion, Morty comes to life and begins stalking and killing the youngsters in ways that go far beyond their most horrific nightmares.

One of the quintessential mid 90s indie horror films, Vincent Robert’s THE FEAR features Heather Medway (TV's Viper), Ann Turkel (Humanoids From the Deep), Vince Edwards (The Killing), plus a rare acting role from legendary horror filmmaker, Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street). Taking full advantage of its scenic locales, THE FEAR ramps up its body count, leading to a tense and bloody climax and is headed to Blu-ray, fully uncut and uncensored in a new, 4K restoration of its 35mm camera negative.

Reviews

Boring piece of wood

"It was a boring movie when it got out in the 90s, and thanks to VS, it's now a boring movie with a great transfer! The story is kind of boring, the actors look like they don't give a dime and the visual effects on the. . . thing. . . !? It's just lousy. Movies like The Leprechaun were also lousy, but they were self-aware."

Morty (and Wes Craven) No!

"Synopsis: Richard is a psych student at the local college who wants to do a fear therapy session at a remote cabin in the middle of the woods while a campus rapist stalks the school grounds. When his group gets to the cabin they discover a creepy old wooden dummy named Morty that Richard uses as a device for people to tell their fears to. That may seem like a good idea but things take a turn for the worst when Morty comes to life and members of the fear therapy session start to die. Richard has to try and survive not only Morty but try to uncover a deeply buried secret. Review: A very well done Morty and a Wes Craven cameo are both wasted in this boring and poorly acted psycho thriller. There was a lot of potential here but barely any of it was realized as a well set up film falls apart very early on and never gets back on track. Carnage Count 1/5 Sleaze Score 2/5"

From VHS Curiosity to Respectable Upgrade

"Having first seen this on VHS years ago, I remember finding it serviceable but not especially memorable. Vinegar Syndrome’s release offers a surprisingly strong presentation and a solid set of supplements that really helped me reappraise the film. The late Wes Craven’s cameo is also a fun and unexpected highlight."

are you scared of tree people?

"Because if not, you will be after watching THE FEAR. What a bizarre piece of mid90s low-budget horror. Honestly had a lot of fun with this one."

Creepy Wood Guy

"If you are old enough to remember the 90s, this is one of those movies that when you watch it youre like “how the hell did I never see this at the video store!” It’s not a good movie by any standard measure, but it stirs up many emotions in the heart of true cinephiles. Mainly, the feeling of “holy shit this is hilarious!” Great release with great extras! See it now!"

I like it

"Almost didn’t pick this up because I got it mixed up with Last Gasp for some reason but I’m glad I did. I like the cover art and there’s some good extras. If it’s still in stock I’d say it’s worth a look."

Aidan Z. (5/5)

This is a great little

"This is a great little horror flick I remember renting back when it came out. It actually survived better than some. It’s no Pin but pretty creepy stuff at times."

Don’t Fear, Rude Boy Get Outta Here!

"It’s like a Freddy ripoff only very wooden. I viewed this film on The Fear Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray Limited Edition physical media release and it is the same great premium level of packaging and presentation that you’ve come to expect from the generic releases of this boutique label. No other brand beats Vinegar Syndrome at the cardboard game and this great slipcover is no exception to the consistently fantastic artwork and component quality this company produces. For my full detailed review of The Fear, see my entry on Letterboxd: @M4N14K"

The missing piece is inside!

"What a stupid movie that I actually kond of enjoyed. This plays as of Lifetime decided to make a supernatural slasher but the acting is better than most Lifetime movies I've seen. Morty (the living wooden man that stalks the film) isn't the villain and doesn't really directly kill most of the cast outside of one. . . maybe two?. . . people. There's a lot of melodrama, some hilarious accidental incest, subplots about embezzling, infidelity, incidental matricide and a campus rapist on the loose. I think they had some good ideas here, but the execution is terrible, yet I still found myself entertained by this movie, just not in the ways the filmmakers intended."

Derrick A. (3/5)

Takes wooden acting to the next level

"I always used to see this around on VHS but never picked it up. It's probably more interesting to me now than it would have been then, 90s nostalgia I guess. Always nice to see Wes Craven again too. A minor but watchable cabin in the woods movie though it could have been 20 minutes shorter. Disc looked great."
