Presented in partnership with Something Weird Video...

The American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) represents the world's largest theatrical catalog of exploitation cinema. Their home video line presents a diverse selection of movies, ranging from new preservations of classics from the vast library of Something Weird to the wildest in shot-on-video (SOV) titles. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

In the 1990s, Something Weird Video hypnotized a generation of movie maniacs by unearthing the most radically surreal genre films of all time—all via the magic of VHS. SHOCK-O-RAMA VIDEO PARTY is a hallucinogenic tribute to those cathode-tube-fueled days. Featuring four regional horror-blasts—preserved from the original Something Weird S-VHS masters, as the film elements have been lost—this collection serves as a time machine to a beloved era in home video history.

THE NAKED WITCH (1961, 59 mins)
One-part documentary and all-parts unreal, this Texas-made exploration of witchcraft from Larry Buchanan (ZONTAR, THE THING FROM VENUS) is a dreamy travelogue to parts unknown.

VIOLATED (1953, 67 mins)
A pre-cursor to PSYCHO, this DIY horror-noir was filmed in the gutters of NYC and written by exploitation producer William Mishkin.

GHOSTS OF HANLEY HOUSE (1968, 85 mins)
Written, produced, and directed by one-time filmmaker Louise Sherrill, this phantasmagorical DIY version of THE HAUNTING appears uncut for the first time on widely released home video.

PASSION IN THE SUN (1964, 69 mins)
Also known as THE GIRL AND THE GEEK, this carnival-set rampager from Texas wildman Dale Berry (HOT BLOODED WOMAN) is outsider trash-art of the highest order.

"The Naked Witch: Was she a witch or a widow wronged? We'll never know, but this bad movie has a load of regional charm and just enough to its visual elements (including the TX hill country backdrop) and musical score (delightfully atmospheric organ) to make this fun to watch. It helps that it fulfills both with witches and nakedness as an exploitation film. Almost entirely consisting of voice-over narration this is also silent-film adjacent. I can't decide if I would have preferred it just being a silent film, or if the terrible voice acting is essential to the B-movie charm of this. Violated: Proto-slasher with commonalities to proto-giallo. . . a bit of exploitation and a dash of noir. . . whatever this serial killer film qualifies as, it's worth watching for genre fans and shots of the NYC streets, but doesn't stand out to offer much special. Ghosts of Hanley House: "They were evil in life, so they're evil in death. " A low-budget movie with imperfections, but a ton of atmospheric soul, interesting visuals, and earnestness. A unique take on The Haunting and inspired in some ways by the original film of that story, The Ghosts of Hanley House could easily be taken as inspiration for other haunted house themed works. The 'frights' within the house amount to far less than what the famous 1963 pulls off, but this one does really land a good ending. Passion in the Sun: Z-grade regional exploitation fare with nary any dialogue and a minimalist chaotic score. It is absolutely terrible, yet weird enough to be interesting at least once. It's a showcase of burlesque/stripper stars from I assume a local Texas club with some half-baked narrative quasi-plot built around. A feral circus geek escapes his cage into the TX countryside. Police are after two criminals coming in a flight from Cuba. The criminals get off their plane at the airport and take a woman (who happens to be a local stripper) hostage. The criminals fight, the woman escapes, and the surviving man chases her, as she loses clothes. Midway through the chase she decides to go skinny dipping. After some more running she decides to sun bathe. Just as she escapes from the criminal though, that escaped circus geek is there after her. The police eventually save the day and get their reward, drinks and entertainment at a good table at the strip club. Interspersed with all of this we get dance numbers from the woman's fellow work colleagues as they await news of what happened to their kidnapped friend. I don't know why I bothered typing all of this out other than it is so bizarrely random and convoluted just to provide padding for some filmed burlesque numbers. It's a bit noir, a bit horror, and a lot sleazy. Definitely Something Weird."

Witches, Witches, WITCHES!!!

"A very enjoyable release. This feels like what would happen if you go to Michael J. Weldon's house, order a pizza and picked something random from his VHS collection."

Shocking

"A trio of shocking schlock on poor film stock. Each shocker more schlocker than the last"

AGFADROME

"Best viewed as intended, at an all night sleep over with an extreme amount of couch-lock. From the vaults of Something Weird's tape transfer library comes a quadrilogy of questionable late night curiosities. Bust out the comfy PJs and get ready to get VIOLATED."

"Movies The Naked Witch: I actually quite enjoyed this when it was a documentary about German settlement of the Texas Hill Country. It's unfortunate it didn't manage the transition into horror movie well. There's some decent atmosphere, but just not a lot happens. There's an extended swimming sequence which is pretty boring. There's barely any nudity seen in the movie, and it seems like there was some censorship done directly on whatever film (or tape?) element this was scanned from, which is unfortunate. Violated: Mediocre old B&W movie about a serial rapist. Very slight intrigue, and ends with a mild hook. Ghosts of Hanley House: Overall a very dull movie, although once you get to the titular house you get an OK, background-level old dark house ambience. Even the _rough_ picture quality (from the AGFA Shock-O-Rama Video Party) and slightly monotonous score (lots of "drippy" sound effects) kind of add to the vibes. Possibly because the setup really lowered my expectations I was (slightly) pleasantly surprised by a couple of the later scenes. Passion in the Sun: Very boring and aimless. The only real draw is topless women dancing, but it's nothing you can't see better in any number of movies like this. The editor also seems to have agreed that the "plot" is a nothingburger, because multiple times it cuts from the main action to an unrelated dance sequence. It's slightly funny the first time it happens, and then every other time it's just "meh", like the movie as a whole. It absolutely deserves its spot as the 4th movie in the Shock-O-Rama set. Seeing it after three other mid B&W movies (plus interstitials) is probably the best it's going to get. Extras: The trailers and drive-in snipes are really the highlight here, so about 15 minutes out of nearly 300. It's definitely neat to be able to watch them all in slumber party mode, although I'm not sure when I would actually do that. Still, one can only dream. Card: Neat little interview with the producer of The Naked Witch. Packaging: Well designed cover."

Nothing that's a cult classic, but it's fun.

"I'm just glad they're being preserved. Would probably be better in a party setting."

Just what I’ve come to

"Just what I’ve come to expect from AGFA by way of VS: odd, slightly sleazy, grindhouse-esque films gathered together on an single disk. Lovely stuff."

Scott L. (5/5)

AGFA never disappoints!

"AGFA never disappoints and this title is no less! The looks of some of the videos are shocking to some and it's no high art. . . just entertainment that's way off center and fun. Especially in a party setting! Check out all the volumes!"

Nicholas T. (5/5)

Four ultra-rare regional gems preserved

"Four ultra-rare regional gems preserved from the original S-VHS masters. Gritty, weird, and pure nostalgia—perfect for late-night viewing."

Weird Movies that Entertain

"Although these movies are weird and corny at times they pack a punch in entertainment value. I just love old B&W movies that are off beat and to unexpected places."
