Martin Bells is finding it tough to pay his way through law school, especially as his studies occupy nearly all of his waking hours. Needing to make extra income while remaining in a quiet environment, he takes a job as a night watchman at the city morgue. However, shortly after his arrival, a twisted necrophiliac killer begins murdering local prostitutes. As Detective Thomas Cray begins to investigate, the clues he uncovers unexpectedly start to point towards Martin as the prime suspect…

A twist-filled contemporary whodunit, adapted from director Ole Bornedal’s own 1994 Danish film while taking cues from the then-reemerging Hollywood slasher boom, NIGHTWATCH (1997) offers an all-star cast including Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting), three-time Academy Award® nominee Nick Nolte (48 Hrs., The Thin Red Line), Academy Award® nominee Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Academy Award® nominee Brad Dourif (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), and Academy Award® winner Patricia Arquette (Boyhood). Vinegar Syndrome is proud to bring this tense and grisly thriller to UHD, newly and exclusively restored in 4K from its original 35mm camera negative, and packed with both new and archival extras.

Nightwatch

"Great to see this finally released. Stylish and atmospheric thriller with an amazing cast. Nice packaging and set of extras!"

Gabriel G. (4/5)

A fun watch

"This definitely could have been and should have been much better. A strong cast, a could-be strong plot, it definitely had a buzzsaw taken to it by Hollywood execs. Its pacing was steady, despite a prolonged start up, and all of it felt in place, it just didn't move as it felt like it should. Visually, it had so much good going on, thought the 1997 soundtrack was loud and obnoxious and very out of place. It's not as bad as the critics savaging it said it was at the time, but it's certainly near as good as it could be. That said, it was ultimately a mildly fun watch."

Donald M. (5/5)

Excited about this one

"I was excited about this release I kept hearing great things about the film I love the creepy atmosphere of the time with the 5. 1 audio it’s a great release and all the extras highly recommended"

No N. (5/5)

Excellent Dark Thriller

"While not as good as the Danish original, this is nonetheless a fine Hollywood remake, with a superb cast. I've been waiting a long time for a good release of this, and VS delivered with a stacked edition."

Kyle S. (4/5)

Great Treatment for a Forgotten Gem

"Nightwatch must have hit me at just the right time - the time when every Miramax release was worth paying attention to. Even when it bombed at the box office, I knew I still had to catch it. Nightwatch isn't a masterpiece - it was probably a very good film that got Weinstein'd to death during test screenings. When you read the essays in the booklet and other interviews with director Ole Bornedal, you can see on the screen what he was trying to do and it lands better with context. Nick Nolte is stellar, Josh Brolin does a lot with his role. Ewen McGregor occasionally slips into a terrible "american" accent, but he still has Ewen McGregor's charisma. I hope the day comes that the "work print" gets a proper release, but for now, VS has knocked it out of the park with this package. If you read about Nightwatch, and knew you had to catch it, it should sit on your shelf next to other glorious 90s Miramax misfires like Four Rooms and Albino Alligator."

Miles N. (5/5)

Pales In Comparison

"This is a remake of a Danish film. It has a great cast, and it follows the original incredibly well. It has the same director and writer along with a co-write from Stephen Soderbergh, but it just doesn't compare to the original. I can't put my finger on why it didn't work for me. Nick Nolte was miscast in this one, and some of the acting was very hammy. I would just watch the superior original film."

Nathan L. (3/5)

Great hidden 90s gem!

"I bought this as a blind buy while the trailer really had me intrigued. This proved to be a great decision! Noghtwatch has a definitive 90s feel, but also has the makings of a genuine creepy late night thriller sprinkled with some neo-noir flavor. Overall a great movie presented in stunning quality"

Harry R. (5/5)

A blind buy that I loved

"I haven’t seen the original but I enjoyed this English remake. Has an amazing cast and the 4K looks great."

Anthony P. (4/5)

Very good remake

"Great cast. Film was interesting. Loses a star since it did not include any of the alternate cuts. Thank you."

Danilo R. (4/5)

Nightwatch

"Was eager to grab this release as soon as it was announced and it doesn’t disappoint. The new transfer is a huge upgrade and looks wonderful, with a really informative book and features."
