Madman Mars in on the prowl in 4K

"To me, Madman falls just slightly below The Burning on the totem pole of camp slashers--The Friday the 13th series obviously at the top, followed by Sleepaway Camp. Madman has some great kills and a killer score. And if you want cheese, there cheesy moments galore from the hot tub to the Madman Mars song. It all makes for a satisfying good time. Glad to see VinSyn give this one the 4K HD treatment, and it looks great with some graininess present in a lot of the dark scenes."

"Joe Giannone’s Madman is not a slasher. It is a liturgy. Dismissing it as backwoods axe-fodder is the sort of thing one expects from critics who have never sat in the dark and let James Lemmo’s cobalt-drenched frames wash over them like stained glass in a woodland chapel. Marz himself — lumbering, silent, half-myth — is less a killer than a negative space onto which the adolescent camp counselors project their unspoken dread. The film understands, with a clarity bordering on the sacred, that to name a thing is to summon it. This is horror as invocation, as folklore, as the oldest story told badly by the best firelight. The synth score pulses like something breathing under the floorboards of the genre. And in 4K, Vinegar Syndrome has rendered every grain, every flicker, every vertical print-line with the devotional reverence of a Flemish restoration. A minor masterpiece, hushed and whispered. Speak its name above a whisper at your peril. "
