Reviews
dive into the deteriorating mind
"A very interesting and entertaining dive into the deteriorating mind of the lead character as he deals with the possibility of inheriting his mother's mental illness, schizophrenia. Excellent restoration with great picture and signs quality."
— Kresh R. (3/5)
HYPE for Hypochondriac
"The amount of unneccessary queer coding in this movie is ridiculous. I love the characters & the story & the message about being misinformed about yer health, & how not taking the familial & genetic component into effect can cause catastrophe. But the relationship between the lead & his partner seems like a misunderstanding of queer relationships, & his partner is really insensitive. The visuals, displaying his psychosis & psychedlia are very strong, & the suspense created by his mother is really tense. XYZ Films has done it again."
— Zadeh G. (4/5)
Excellent LGBTQ Thriller
"This is a fantastic psychological horror flick that resonates deeply. LGBTQ highly recommended."
— Jeffrey L. (5/5)
Was expecting a horror movie,
"Was expecting a horror movie, not what I got. Not terrible, but probably wont stay in the collection."
— Justin B. (3/5)
Very relatable psychological horror
"Love this film been wanting to watch it but it has been unavailable on streaming forever. Glad I pulled the plug and ordered it."
— Zachery M. (5/5)
Horror and mental illness done with compassion
"This was my first XYZ purchase and I was quite impressed ! I can't get enough of quality queer horror and I was pleased to add this to my library. Zack Villa (who played Richard Ramirez in American Horror Story: 1984) tears up the screen as gay ceramicist trying to live a normal life with his partner but is haunted by the memories of his estranged and absent mother. The extras and commentary add to the experience and the booklet's essays are a fun read."
— Shawn P. (5/5)
Very Engaging Flick!
"The illness runs rampant throughout this one and all of the performances are top rate! The director seems to follows his vision and creates a very engaging and intriguing film! The peerless VS restoration process was on full display with stellar sound and picture! Thank you, VS, for continuing to lovingly restore and release so many wonderful films from every conceivable genre! You are keeping physical media alive in this streaming world we now live in! Highly recommended!"
— Paul K. (5/5)
Hypochondriac
""Hypochondriac" is a visceral and deeply personal psychological thriller that unflinchingly portrays a young man's terrifying descent into mental illness, blurring the lines between reality and delusion as he confronts inherited trauma."
— Pierre L. (3/5)
Odd
"Not for everyone, odd storyline"
— Niels S. (3/5)
Hypochondriac
"This was a powerful and unsettling film that stuck with me. Hypochondriac dives deep into mental health, trauma, and identity in a way that feels raw and personal. The tone is heavy, and at times more emotionally intense than I expected. That said, I went in expecting something more supernatural or visually intense, mostly because of how the trailer was cut, thus my rating of 4/5. So while the horror elements are there, they’re not exactly what I expected."
— Mario S. (4/5)
