Kai is a violent fugitive on the run from the law. Making his way from Hong Kong to South Africa, he begins a new life working at a small Chinese restaurant. When he joins his boss on a work trip through the African savanna, he encounters a remote African tribe afflicted with the Ebola virus. After attacking a young woman from the tribe, he contracts the virus, but to his surprise, he discovers that he’s immune to the deadly disease. His ruthlessness emboldened, Kai returns to Hong Kong, thus setting into motion a blood spewing and bodily fluids oozing nightmare!

One of the most shocking and notorious Category III films, Herman Yau’s (The Untold Story) EBOLA SYNDROME is a delectably grotesque and darkly comedic splatter film masterwork and stars Hong Kong cult film superstar, Anthony Wong (Hard Boiled), in one of his most outrageous performances. For years almost impossible to find in its uncut form, Vinegar Syndrome is delighted to present the worldwide UHD debut of EBOLA SYNDROME, newly scanned and restored in 4K from its original 35mm camera negative and finally fully uncut for the first time on English friendly home video.

    Ebola Syndrome

"I would be hard pressed to think of a movie as nihilistic as Ebola Syndrome. There is not one character, scene or concept of this is movie that is wholly good or altruistic. You don’t walk away feeling good. While not as good as Lau’s previous movie, The Untold Story, Ebola Syndrome goes into a somewhat similar but more bombastic direction. Animal deaths will always reduce a movie’s rating for me and this movie is no exception. The deaths serve no purpose. I love the slipcover by Chris Barnes. The extra features are worth a viewing for sure, some BTS footage and a couple of interviews with Herman Yau."

    Steven C. (3/5)

    Insane Fun

"One of the craziest protagonists ever, making it a fun movie from beginning to end. The story feels like a series of vignettes."

    Viktor A. (4/5)

    Nasty

"Nasty Category III flick. Great transfer"

    Matthew R. (5/5)

Not for everyone but I enjoyed

"I loved this movie. It’s definitely not for everyone but I couldn’t turn away. The gore is some of the best I’ve seen, the plot is insane"

    Eric D. (5/5)

    One of the greatest films

"One of the greatest films of all time. Absurd violent and hilarious. Slick design. Looks and sounds great. For the bunker."

    Miles M. (5/5)

Uncompromising Cat III Shock in Reference 4K

"This 4K release of Ebola Syndrome delivers a striking upgrade, with heightened detail and stable grain that preserve the film’s grimy, lurid aesthetic. Colors are richer without looking artificial, and the Cantonese track sounds clean and balanced. Extras add welcome context. A definitive presentation of one of Hong Kong’s most notorious exploitation films."

    Tristin B. (5/5)

    Great

"The transfer is great, loved the reversible cover."

    Conor S. (5/5)

One of the wildness Hong Kong film

"Pure Hong Kong Cat III madness with Anthony Wong going full psycho. Over-the-top gore, dark laughs, and that wild energy. The transfer is in very good quality."

    CHAN T. (5/5)

This movie is sick. . .

"I was waiting for the perfect time to watch this one solo as the cool but gross slipcover told me that my wife probably wouldn't like this. After watching it, I really don't think she would. Anthony Wong would repulse her with his nastiness, inside and out. He plays his character as such a weasel but a dangerous one with no regard for anyone but himself. The movie is ridiculously gory and offensive. Needless to say, it's a blast. Even before the Ebola becomes a plot point, this film has plenty of over-the-top insanity. The virus is just a cherry on top of a demented snot sundae."

    NICHOLAS K. (5/5)

    My Category III Entry Point

"As someone completely new to both Category III films and Herman Yau, this 4K release of Ebola Syndrome turned out to be the perfect blind buy. Vinegar Syndrome delivers once again with a deluxe transfer that brings out the film’s chaotic energy, from its grimy textures to its surprisingly vivid colors. The sound is a highlight too, giving the movie an intensity I wasn’t prepared for in the best way. The inclusion of the booklet, interviews, featurettes AND a commentary by Samm Deighan, one of my absolute favorites, makes this feel like the ideal jumping‑off point before going deeper down the Cat III rabbit hole."
