Assuming he is incapable of winning, all of the members of a prestigious Madison Avenue advertising firm accidentally vote to appoint the company's only black executive, Putney Swope, as chairman of the board. His unexpected win behind him, Swope changes the company's name to 'Truth and Soul, Inc,' fires nearly all of its elderly white employees, and focuses solely on creating subversive, outlandish, and shocking campaigns. As the company is catapulted to new heights of success, Swope finds that he has drawn the ire of the U.S. President, who seeks to declare him and his renegade staff a threat to national security.

Considered one of the masterpieces of late 60s counterculture cinema, Robert Downey Sr.’s (Greaser's Palace) PUTNEY SWOPE remains a vital cinematic satire on race, politics and pop culture. Featuring a supporting performance from character actor Allen Garfield (Nashville) alongside a cameo from Mel Brooks, Vinegar Syndrome is proud to present the world Blu-ray debut of PUTNEY SWOPE in a stunning new 4k restoration created by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and The Film Foundation.

Reviews

Peepee Dickey!

"I dont fully understand the politics of Putney Swope, and after watching the features on the disc its apparent that neither does the Director Robert Downey Sr. ! I had a boss who would enter the room qouting this film constantly, and indeed its hilarious. . . a more rebellious, satirical Mad Men parody focusing on racial politics. But by the halfway point the movies taken its best shots and kind of turns on itself as it pads to its own end, but nevertheless Putney is a cool cat and worth every penny."

“Add to cart” “Check out” “Pay Now”

Its not all exploitation over at VS

"Sometimes its an entirely different brand of weirdo shit that none of these other cowards have the pure hutzpah ship! Buy it, you'll be happy you did."

William P. (5/5)

Funny

"biting, hilarious, and fiercely experimental film that criticizes race, Madison Avenue advertising, and corporate America from RDJ’s daddy."

Kevin G. (5/5)

Timeless Satire On the Ad Industry

"Hilarious satire about the advertising industry and corporate world in general. Decades later, this film’s commentary is still relevant. If you like movies such as “Sorry to Bother You”, this is right up your alley."

Brian R. (4/5)

Sink the boat!

"A strong premise with a hilarious setup that sees the downfall of a typically-oligarchic board of Mad Men “crabs in a bucket”-style when the token black member is put in charge. The film fizzles from there, particularly scenes in the White House, but Downey has much to say (literally, since he dubbed the lead’s voice) and clearly has a bone to pick with his former career in advertising."

Alan H. (3/5)

satire flick about the advertising industry and racial status in the United States in the sixties

"This is a quality release of a classic satire flick about the advertising industry and racial status in the United States in the sixties. Comes with loads of extras, including interviews with the director, and nifty packaging artwork."
