Presented in partnership with Something Weird Video...
From nudies to roughies to ultra weird regional curiosities, the sexploitation world welcomed any filmmaker working in any genre, so long as the limits of nudity and sex on screen were pushed as far as they could go - but never all the way. DISTRIBPIX, one of the legendary names in the genre (and whose extensive library will be the backbone of this line), will offer single, double, and even triple feature Blu-rays highlighting works from every corner and crevice of softcore smut, from the dawn of nudie cuties to the all-but-hard 70s, with plentiful lost and never on disc films along the way.
A quintessential exploitation filmmaker, the late Joel M. Reed's filmography traversed just about every corner of genre filmmaking, from ultra-gory horror with BLOODSUCKING FREAKS to oddball action with THE G.I. EXECUTIONER. But at the start of his career, like so many working in B-movies, Reed helmed a set of sexploitation films. However, not content to simply offer T&A with a flimsy storyline, Reed instead created what rank as two of the most jaw dropping and demented such efforts ever produced, both of which at last come to Blu-ray, newly scanned and restored in 4K from their 35mm camera negatives from Distribpix + Something Weird.
In Reed's electric debut, CAREER BED, Jennifer Welles (Scorpio 70) stars as Susan, an impressionable young woman on the hard road to cinema stardom. Under the brutal and cruel pressure of her manipulative and jealous mother, Susan's life quickly becomes overtaken with casting couches, lecherous producers, lesbian agents, and general money making scams.
Chock full of jaw droppingly acidic dialogue, delivered through the powerhouse performances of Welles and one-time-player Honey Hunter as Susan's scheming mother, CAREER BED plays like an unhinged mix of underground theatre and classical Hollywood melodrama.
Reed's no-less-strange sophomore feature, SEX BY ADVERTISEMENT, explores the weird world of erotic newspaper ads in a mondo-film styled pastiche. Hosted by Dr. Joanne Ridgefield (soon-to-be-superstar Georgina Spelvin in one of her earliest roles), all manners of perversity are uncovered, from hippie love-ins, violent sadists, transvestites, dirty photographers, and much more. Co-starring Warhol superstar Geri Miller (Trash, High Rise), this wild and wacky ride effortlessly manages to shock from beginning to end.

"Career Bed is much better than Sex by Advertisment. Campy exploitation by way of a prime time soap it’s pretty hilarious."
"This is a superb, must have disc! The pictue and sound are excellent (and the movies are good, too). An excellent package with a hardcover case and wonderful booklet. Great performances from Jennifer Welles and Georgina Spelvin. A must have for fans of 1960s sexploitation."
"I basically knew the director only of his film Bloodsucking Freaks. Well, these sexploitation, B&W films are also seriously freaky while also shot exceptionally well. I think I prefer Career Bed because I generally more focused stories (Sex By Advertisement is a lot looser in that regard). There is enough kinky stuff in here to make it an engaging watch. These sets by Distribpix are amazing and look like centerpieces in your collection"
"The Distribpix package design is very nice, and I always like getting a booklet with information, essays and good pictures. The A-Side "Career Bed" is great fun, with nice displays of future hardcore stars Jennifer Welles and Georgina Spelvin. And I really enjoyed the wicked stage mother character played by Honey Hunter. Her only movie role apparently, but she was fun. Great body that she was willing to capture on film for guys like me to admire 60 years later. Cheers, Honey!"
"Two Joel Reed sexploitation flicks featuring the incomparable Jennifer Wells. Beautiful transfer and restoration, packed with extras and an incredibly over the top slip case, hard box + booklet package."
"Loving these distropix releases by way of Something Weird! Jennifer Welles is a total babe and the b&w transfer is a knock out"
"I found this cool 2 film collection while perusing the VS website and upon watching them, I discovered they are both good quality fun films that are interesting from beginning to end! The peerless VS restoration process was on full display with stellar sound and picture! Thank you, VS, for continuing to lovingly restore and release so many wonderful films from every conceivable genre! You are keeping physical media alive in this streaming world we now live in! Highly recommended!"
"Great transfers on this release. I love the faux-documentary sexploitation genre, so if you love that, you`ll probably love this It`s dry and sorta slow, and filled will locations that are endlessly interesting."
"Career Bed (1969) and Sex by Advertisement (also known as Sex by Ad, 1969) are both low‑budget exploitation dramas from the late 1960s, each using sensational premises to explore ambition, manipulation, and the darker edges of show‑business culture. While they share an era and a grindhouse sensibility, they approach their themes in distinct ways. Career Bed is a darkly comic drama about a domineering mother who becomes obsessed with turning her teenage daughter into a movie star. Her fixation leads her to push the girl into increasingly uncomfortable situations, convinced that fame justifies any sacrifice. The film’s tone mixes satire with melodrama, presenting a portrait of parental ambition taken to disturbing extremes. Its small cast—led by Jennifer Welles—anchors the story with a mix of theatricality and grit. Sex by Advertisement follows a different exploitation angle, built around the idea of people responding to provocative personal ads. The film uses this structure to create a series of loosely connected vignettes about desire, loneliness, and the fantasies people project onto strangers. Like many late‑1960s underground features, it mixes satire with voyeuristic curiosity, using the ad‑response format to comment on the growing commercialization of intimacy."
"Career Bed + Sex By Advertisement is a fascinating double feature that captures a very specific era of exploitation filmmaking. Both films have a raw, experimental quality that makes them interesting not just for the subject matter but for how they reflect the shifting boundaries of cinema at the time. The looks of the release are strong. The transfers maintain the vintage texture of the original materials while still presenting the films clearly and consistently. Colors and contrast feel natural, allowing the period style to come through without looking overly processed. The overall package is well put together and clearly aimed at collectors. The artwork and presentation feel cohesive and thoughtfully designed, making it a nice addition to a shelf of cult or archival releases. The different levels of tone between the two films make the set engaging, with each offering a slightly different perspective on exploitation-era storytelling. Overall, this is a well-presented release that preserves a unique slice of film history in a collector-friendly package."
