SCARY TALES proves that the films of John Waters and Don Dohler aren’t the only genre miracles from Baltimore. A shot-on-video horror anthology that plays out like a public access version of CREEPSHOW, this is what happens when Satanic necklaces, bloodthirsty slashers, and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS-styled live action role playing collide with cool dads, neon lightbulbs, and dungeon synthesizers. AGFA and Bleeding Skull! are thrilled to present this charming, gore-filled dreamscape that has been meticulously pieced together from its original S-VHS master tapes.

Reviews

Honestly, this was a bit of a let down.

"Great packaging, great package, and fun extras. I personally wasn't feeling it fully but can def see the charm and enjoyment people have for it. Maybe it's just me and I need to revisit it down the road. Worth a go if you are a SOV fan for sure."

Emilio M. (5/5)

Endearing regional SOV

"Good old fashion “dudes having fun” SOV goodness. Therefore gags in the second story are a lot of fun. The last story Level 21 is a fun play on the “guy ends up in a video game” idea. Not as much fun as something like a Fabio Salerno feature, but has that charm. The narrator between segments are also cool. Loved how the same couple actors are in each story, and I would love to drink at that bar that totally isn’t someone’s finished basement."

Michael G. (4/5)

Some really solid and crazy

"Some really solid and crazy SOV horror, if that floats your boat!"

Matthew P. (4/5)

“Analog Fear, No Safety Net: AGFA’s Resurrection of a SOV Oddity

"AGFA’s Blu-ray release of Scary Tales gives the impression that a time capsule from the early ’90s has been discovered in a backyard, allowing its peculiarities to finally be appreciated. This film exemplifies regional horror in its truest form—created on video, assembled with determination rather than financial means, and driven by the kind of do-it-yourself passion that characterized the underground cinema of that time. The careful restoration not only enhances the visual quality; it also revitalizes the essence of the film."

Shawn G. (4/5)

Great anthology

"Really fun gore with a great host inbetween stories."

Sean T. (5/5)

Perfect bloody backyard jam

"Probably one of the best examples of a bloody backyard sov horror movie that delivers"

Teun H. (5/5)

One more for the cult of SOV

"SOV Horror from Baltimore. The weirder the better frankly, no guardrails, very fun release!"

Valentine S. (5/5)

Really unique SOV anthology horror

"Really unique SOV anthology horror with some fun visual effects for the budget. Love that it comes with another movie by the director in the bonus features."

Sam A. (5/5)

Spooky scary video tales

"The charm of SOV projects only grows with time. The “content” age has made me grow more appreciative of watching regular people’s DIY endeavors. 3 entertaining shorts that exemplify the beauty of backyard cinema."

Brett D. (4/5)
