Since 2004, Bleeding Skull has explored otherworldly cinema through reviews, books, and home video releases. We shine a light on independent genre films that have flown under the radar but deserve to be seen by all. Fangoria has called Bleeding Skull “The go-to encyclopedia for trash, bizarre, and shot-on-video cinema,” while Vice referred to it as “like a fever dream glimpse into parallel worlds". Welcome to the 1980s TV horrorshow that never was . . . again. Set around Halloween, PHANTASMATAPES II is a psychotronic VHS mixtape that reimagines ATOM AGE VAMPIRE (an Italian mutation of Georges Franju's EYES WITHOUT A FACE) and DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT (the gritty proto-slasher from filmmaker S.F. Brownrigg) as a late-nite, home-taped double feature—complete with local TV commercials and a new synthesizer score from Taken by Savages (JUNGLE TRAP). Inspired by hazy memories of channel-surfing at the witching hour, this is a nostalgic and experimental art project from the minds behind Bleeding Skull.
For even more midnight chills, grab a bundle featuring the PHANTASMATAPES II synthesizer soundtrack on cassette—limited to just 100 copies.

Reviews
Taken by Savages
"Back with another amazing synth score! They should do a vinyl release of this soundtrack like they did with jungle trap. Seriously rules hard. I love how Bleeding Skull assembled a whole TV double feature experience. The commercials are great and add to the effect."
— Zach C. (5/5)
Synthwave Mixtape
"A fun watch with inventive visual effects, a little reminiscent of WNUF. While the synth soundtrack suits the film's aesthetic, it can be a bit intrusive at times."
— Noel H. (5/5)

"A wacky idea and a lot of fun. Would be great for playing in the background of Halloween parties."
— Jeff S. (4/5)
Bleeding skull
"Brilliant release, a very vibey fun Kate night mixtape from the Bleeding Skull crew. Peak 2am ambiance. Including the original films plus a commentary is a very nice touch."
— Ben C. (5/5)
Haunted 2 A. M. VHS Energy
"Phantasmatapes is such a cool Bleeding Skull idea: a fake late-night VHS broadcast that turns The Revenge of Dr. X and The Brain That Wouldn’t Die into a warped 1980s horror double feature, complete with local-TV commercial texture and a new synth score. It feels less like a normal movie release and more like tuning into some haunted channel at 2 a. m. , which is exactly the appeal. The tape-worn presentation, oddball pacing, and psychotronic collage energy make it a really fun mood piece. The Blu-ray is also packed in the right way, with the commentary, uncut VHS preservations of both features, shorts, and SDH subtitles giving the project a lot of value beyond the 72-minute mixtape. Strange, nostalgic, and very rewatchable as background Halloween atmosphere."
— Danny W. (5/5)
Phuntastic
"I love projects like this. It had me grinning throughout it's entire runtime. Great batch of extras as well - almost worth it just for the Max Headroom signal intrusion footage alone."
— Toby L. (4/5)
A Lo‑Fi Haunting Sharpened for the Cult Shelf
"PHANTASMATAPES is a lo‑fi collage of analog hauntings, VHS distortion, and dream‑logic dread. Bleeding Skull’s Blu‑ray preserves the tape‑rot aesthetic, adds thoughtful extras, and elevates this eerie SOV oddity without sanding off its weirdness. INCLUDES: Region Free Blu-ray PHANTASMATAPES: A 72-minute VHS mixtape Commentary by Bleeding Skull's Annie Choi and Joseph A. Ziemba THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE (1962, 82 mins): Uncut VHS preservation THE REVENGE OF DR. X (1970, 94 mins): Uncut VHS preservation Short: THE MAX HEADROOM PIRATE INCIDENTS (2025, 7 mins) Short: A GHOST (2025, 2 mins) Short: I WANT MY D&D (2025, 8 mins) English SDH subtitles"
