"Wrestling is such a brutal business, it doesn’t surprise people that it attracts sociopaths, fame whores, coke whores, and adrenaline junkies. But why did it attract an artist?” asks Billy Corgan, frontman of The Smashing Pumpkins and wrestling promoter. It’s the central question posed in Nevermore: The Raven Effect, a documentary exploring a pivotal shift in wrestling history through the eyes of Scott Levy, also known as Raven, a brilliant, self-destructive performer who helped shape the style and tone of the no-holds-barred ECW, a notoriously extreme indie promotion known for its bloody matches and use of real weapons.

After being fired from WCW and WWF, Nevermore: The Raven Effect follows Raven’s entry into ECW, where he brought a darker, more rebellious energy that electrified fans and helped ignite the 1990s wrestling boom. The chaos in the ring was fueled by a backstage world of drugs, alcohol, and sex. From “slip and slide rhino orgies” to being revived from an overdose by an adrenaline shot to the heart and wrestling just hours later, the line between performance and reality was dangerously thin. The film shifts between Raven’s present-day reflections and his devil-may-care past, charting a wild ride marked by untimely deaths and the looming shadow of CTE. Interviews with legends like Chris Jericho, Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman, DDP, and Rob Van Dam provide an unfiltered window into the era.

Though hard-hitting, the documentary also captures moments of tenderness, pride, and nostalgia as Raven and his peers look back on what they built, despite the wreckage it left behind. Nevermore: The Raven Effect celebrates Raven’s legacy and the transformation of wrestling in the 1990s while unflinchingly confronting the brutal cost of this high-stakes, high-drama world.

What about me? What about Raven?

"Fantastic documentary on one of ECW‘s greatest wrestlers, Raven. This start does a great service to the man and his work. Many friends and colleagues are interviewed to paint a portrait of a troubled artist, whose canvas is the wrestling ring. Fan of wrestling or not highly recommend this doc."

Dustin G. (5/5)

Nevermore: The Raven Effect

"As I'm not a huge fan of wrestling I was a bit hesitant to watch this one. I had no clue who Raven was before watching this but it was very well done and a great introduction to him, his character, and his wrestling past. It was an entertaining watch for someone who isn't a wrestling fan so I very much recommend it to anyone who is a fan of wrestling and/or Raven. The inclusion of the extended interviews on the disc was a nice addition. After watching the documentary it was nice to be able to watch the extended version of some of the interviews and see more personality from the other people who were interviewed. I am also a fan of the inclusion of the crucifixion and chair stunts included on the front and back of the slip as both of those were very memorable parts of the documentary."

DeLaney G. (5/5)

Great doc on a somewhat underrated wrestler

"I don't think Raven has as much name recognition as many of his contemporaries and that's a shame. I hadn't fully realized how much his character influenced the directions wrestling went in 90's and early 00's. Probably because I only saw his matches on DVD after he'd already dropped out as a full time talent. Even if not a fan of him specifically, this doc touches on the good and bad sides of the wrestling business and will hold your interest throughout. Seems to be sold out already, but check it out if you can."

Ed K. (5/5)

Great Wrestling Doc

"Great wrestling documentary release. I never watched anything wrestling related growing up but the lore fascinates me now. I’ll grab absolutely any doc that comes out and this is certainly one of the best I’ve seen from OCN. I will say this is probably 30 mins too long but I don’t really care. Fantastic time highly recommended."

Joshua A. (4/5)

Consider this an EXTREME recommendation!

"As a lifelong pro wrestling fan who’s formative teen years were spent watching ECW on the MSG network and attending ECW events, I had to grab this as soon as I saw it. Raven was a pivotal character in the history of ECW, and one of the best overall characters in wrestling in the 90s and early 2000s. While diehard fans will know a lot of the material covered, It’s still presented in a fantastic way. I can definitely recommend this, and I hope we continue to get more wrestling documentaries from ETR Media."

Matthew H. (4/5)

Quote the Raven

"I grew up in New Jersey right across the river from south Philly where ECW arena was, late night public access is when ECW would air and Ravens public dramas with Tommy Dreamer and the Sandman played out before my eyes, this was an awesome documentary with a ton of ECWs superstars taking about Raven and other amazing stories in this documentary, for fans of extreme wrestling and the history of ECW"

Frank C. (5/5)

Quote the Raven. . .

"Absolutely amazing documentary. I loved how no one was sugarcoating the struggles that they experienced. I don't think you have to be a wrestling fan to enjoy the story that this documentary creates. This documentary made me want to revisit all those classic Raven ECW and WCW storylines."

Brandon S. (5/5)
