Art Label is the new outlet for envelope-pushing arthouse and experimental cinema. Growing from previous work under the Verboden Video and Culture Shock Releasing banners, Art Label is focusing on films that challenge traditional rules of form and content. Art Label is broadening its roots in horror and exploitation, reaching into other dimensions of expression to give new kicks to a well-versed audience of cinematic thrill seekers. Even the most hardened moviegoers will find stimulation in Art Label's releases.
A mysterious egg contains an impish creature who can grant great power, for good or evil. Brendan Bean, a kindly family man, finds himself face to face with the bizarre creature, and before long a friendship for the ages develops. Meanwhile, the depraved Benny Piazza leads his deranged militia on a violent quest to reclaim the magical homunculi.
Matt Hewitt’s relentlessly strange love letter to the “little bastard” subgenre is as much reminiscent of its inspirations (think Gremlins, Munchies, Ghoulies) as it is completely original. There is nothing like Hoagie out there, and there likely never will be again. This self-assured feature, full of goopy latex practical effects and squibs, is the culmination of a lifetime of ambitious no-budget filmmaking.

Reviews
He’s A Hero
"Hoagie is a scrappy, character-driven indie that leans into awkward humor and small, personal moments. The performances feel natural and unforced, giving the story a grounded, slice-of-life quality. It’s a low-key watch, but its sincerity and offbeat charm make it quietly engaging."

Hoagie
"Hoagie ended up way better than I thought it was going to be, and I thought it was going to be at least entertaining. What we ended up with was an extremely fun DIY movie that is at goopy and wet as it is inventive. Matt Hewitt created something special with this one. The extras of Hoagie are excellent. Watching Hoagie’s House, I appreciated and loved the movie even more. The effects are so low budget but they turned out quite excellent. I haven’t watched the two shorts yet but appreciate that they are included. The slipcover design is great. Very happy I was able to pick this up!"

Hoagie Art Label bluray review
"Art label specializes in artsy and experimental films. Typically those films are not my jam. However the description of Hoagie got me intrigued. The movie is described as being similar to Gremlins, Munchie and Ghoulies. It is described as having lots of squibs and practical effects. That is right in my wheelhouse. I really enjoyed this. It felt like a throwback to films of the '80's. It was a lot of fun and well made. Being from 2025 it looked great. The disc comes stacked with shorts, music videos, a featurette on the practical effects and promotional videos. The OCN slip shows you exactly what to expect. I loved it and recommend this."

OK movie if you're in the right mood
"Not a lot of the humor landed for me. I hoped for a bit more of the Ghoulies/Gremlins/Hobgoblins style and plotting. This takes a hard turn part way through into something quite different. The one bright spot, comedy wise, is the woman who explains Hoagie to the guy that buys him. She is consistently hilarious. Overall the effects are decent too, but the puppet works much better than the guy in the suit."

I love this film it's
"I love this film it's like Ghoulies on Crack! I want it to have like 5 sequels too. It's so gross but ridiculous at the same time you can only have a huge grin on your face. Great disc too. So happy I gave this a chance."

Perfect blind buy
"I love this movie. Never watched it before, total blind buy, no regrets. The slipcover is smokin'!"

Hoagie is a lot of fun!
"The hardest working muscle in the human body is the heart and I firmly believe the folks who made Hoagie must've had theirs working overtime to bring this hideously adorable little creature to life."
— Branden Y. (4/5)
