"These three first Red Peony Gambler movies are incredible. I know there are more movies, and I hope we have a release in the future, but these are fantastic. I highly recommend you all to buy it. The packaging is gorgeous too!!"
"This collection is a landmark release for fans of Japanese yakuza cinema. Junko Fuji is fantastic as Oryu, a stoic female gambler seeking vengeance across three distinct films. The swordplay and card games deliver great pacing and plenty of entertainment."
"The first three entries in the Red Peony Gambler series (Hibotan Bakuto I–III), starring Junko Fuji, establish a compelling blend of ninkyo yakuza codes and feminine stoicism, anchored by Fuji’s quietly commanding performance as Oryu, a wandering gambler bound by honor and revenge. These films balance ritualized violence with melodrama, presenting a stylized world where loyalty, sacrifice, and dignity carry as much weight as the blade. While the narratives follow familiar genre beats—traveling outsider, local injustice, inevitable showdown—it’s the emotional restraint and visual elegance that set them apart, particularly in how Oryu navigates a male-dominated underworld without losing her composure or moral center. The pacing can feel deliberate, even repetitive across the trilogy, but that consistency reinforces the mythic quality of the character. Together, these films form a strong foundation for one of the era’s most iconic yakuza heroines, blending toughness with melancholy in a way that lingers."
"The Red Peony Gambler 1-3 collection, released by Film Movement Classics and Eureka Entertainment, serves as an essential, high-definition restoration of a pivotal Japanese ninkyo eiga trilogy. Featuring Junko Fuji, the films are lauded for their visual quality, thematic depth, and for bringing a refined, female-led perspective to the yakuza subgenre"
"Here's the good news: first three films in 7 film series starring Junko Fuji as a gambling female yakuza. These are great! Hopefully we get the last four plus there are two spin off films starring Tomisaburo Wakayama. Here's the bad news: the encodes on these movies are. . . not good. It's absolutely inexcusable that you have that amount of black crush especially on the first movie which is on its own disc. Blargh. Anyway, highly recommended despite the bummer presentation. Like I said, hope we get the rest of the series. Do better Film Movement!"
"Way before Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill , there were the " Red Peony Gambler" series. These Female-led films obviously have been a great influence on contemporary directors . All three films are extremely entertaining, with beautiful transfers. Artwork and the limited spot Glass slipcover (designed by Poochamin) is great and the Booklet is fantastic. Excellent packaging and shipping. Highly recommended."
"Wow, what an amazing set of films! The transfers are absolutely beautiful and images crisp. This release comes with a gorgeous slipcase, showing off some great artwork. As always, Vinegar Syndrome ships their products incredibly quickly. I live in Canada, and I think it only took four days. Highly recomended!"
"Excellent trilogy of films with fun martial arts. Recommended."
"Film Movement is putting out some great stuff, and the Red Penoy I-III set is a fine example. Beautiful transfers of each film, focusing on Miss Oryu, the Red Peony. Transfressive Yakuza films that give agency to women who wield power and influence in a male-dominated society that is rapidly changing. Plenty of extras packed with info as well."
