"This is sort of like a local cable access show presentation of a film called The Fantasy of The Deer Warrior, if that makes any sense. Maybe it doesn't! It is pretty weird and I loved costumes. Feels like it's aimed at children but has that dark undercurrent (murderous wolf!) that all good classic kids movies have. Missing some video and audio but I imagine this is as good as it gets and we're probably lucky it exists at all."
"I had high hopes for this movie in terms of its weirdness and my enjoyment, and ill admit, the film did not quite meet those standards. But the more I think about it, the more I enjoy and appreciate this strange whimsical piece of Taiwanese movie history. The costumes and scenery are beautiful. There are some great performances, specifically from the fox and the deer warrior actors. And theres a healthy handful of stand out, memorable scenes throughout. The characters are also pretty fun, the fox being my favorite, though obviously some characters get the spotlight more than others. Overall, im glad this film was recovered and restored; it definitely deserves a second life. The booklet included also provides some really interesting historical context."

"I've been interested in Taiwanese cinema for a few years jow and most labels really only put out the classy movies, like the Edward Yangs. Don't get me wrong I usually love those but I'm so much happier to finally see some of the more silly movies."
