BEWARE THE KISS OF THE DEVIL! Maverick exploitation film director Jess Franco and Swiss producer Erwin C. Dietrich's notorious "nunsploitation" classic LOVE LETTERS OF A PORTUGUESE NUN comes to Blu-ray for the very first time in North America, totally uncut and remastered in HD from the original camera negative! 16-year-old Maria (the lovely Susan Hemingway) is taken by force into the dreaded Serra D'Aires convent, a sect secretly run by diabolical Satanists. Her confessor is in collusion with the Mother Superior (Ana Zanatti) and the not so pious pair almost immediately subject Maria to unspeakable tortures, forcing her into sex with men, women, and even the Devil himself. Gaslit into believing this supernatural debauchery is all a dream, she writes a letter to God begging for salvation, but the powers that be have other hideous plans in store for her...

Shocking, salacious and also stunningly shot and expertly performed by an international cast, LOVE LETTERS OF A PORTUGUESE NUN is among the best blasphemous European horror films of the 1970s and a high mark in Franco and Dietrich's respective oeuvres.

Reviews

Too Hot For Australia!

"Pretty funny (not really, pretty ridiculous actually) that this movie was "denied classification", in essence making it illegal for sale in Australia. It's really pretty tame when you think of all the kinds of extreme cinema out there. This Jess Franco movie is shot in a more conventional style that a lot of the ones he's known for. Good story, and great for any fans of the nun-sploitation genre. Beautiful artwork, love the original cover and the new slipcover images."

Fantastic nunsploitation entry

"Another great Jess Franco exotica this time inside the cloistered rooms of nuns. Franco delivers a great entry into nunsploitation. The artwork on the cover is a great part of the package and well worth the limited edition brand."

Timothy D. (5/5)

Praise Be!

"I've only seen two Jess Franco movies, but from what I can gather, his movies aren't always the best in terms of quality. However, this film is actually really good with a decent story, beautiful outdoor scenes, an excellent score, and great performances. That being said, it's as sleazy as you could want. I think I'll be checking out more of his films. I especially like how the Franco slipcovers share a similar art esthetic."

Habit Forming

"Portuguese Nun is as straightforward a nunsploitation narrative as possible from Jess Franco, with all the hallmarks of what makes his films so compelling. Besides the obvious eroticism, there’s beautiful shots of nature and themes of anti-authoritarianism and religious hypocrisy. The only drawback is a rushed ending, but there’s plenty of lesbianism, satanism and sadism to go around."

Francisco W. (4/5)

Franco's nunspolitation

"“Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun” is a stark, provocative entry in the 1970s nunsploitation cycle, blending religious horror, sexual transgression, and historical cruelty into one of Jesús Franco’s more atmospheric and unsettling films. The 1977 West German–Swiss production follows Maria Rosalea, a young girl forced into a convent after being seen with a boy, only to discover that the religious order is a front for sadistic abuse and Satanic ritual. This setup places the film firmly within the nunsploitation genre, where Franco leans into themes of corruption, hypocrisy, and institutional violence."

Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun (Die Liebesbriefe einer portugesischen Nonne)

"Doriana Grey was my full intro to Franco. I had no idea how to really register this one, initially. I enjoyed it a good bit. Felt the horror was well done in executing the uncomfortable nature. Goes really good into the Nunsploitation nature of it. I credit it for that for sure. It really goes and believes in its world. Some minor dull moments of story but otherwise really engaging. Sort of wish we got this in its German language on this film. I thought the dub was fine, understanding how this film was shot. Felt maybe the German track and script may have been better. The English track never felt right. Regardless, I thought the film was well made and executed overall. Features are good. Picture is really good. Sound is decent considering the source. Overall the power of picture really wins me over."

Forever Franco

"Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun is a provocative slice of European exploitation that mixes religious imagery with gothic melodrama. Jesús Franco leans into atmosphere and sensuality, creating a film that feels both dreamlike and transgressive. It’s uneven and definitely not for everyone, but its hypnotic style gives it a certain cult appeal."

Shawn M. (4/5)

Love the artwork on the

"Love the artwork on the cover. As Jess Franco is my favorite director I may be biased but I loved this release. It has all those beautiful Franco touches that I love so much. Susan Hemingway is wonderful in the main role really portraying the innocence of the character. The Great Troy Howarth provides an excellent informative commentary and we go two excellent featurettes featuring Franco himself. Loved this release. Anything Franco is art to me."

Bryan K. (5/5)
