Joe's apartment
"This was so much fun! I enjoyed most of Joe Begos' previous filmogrpahy, but this passion project, which started in Covid and was finished 4 years later, is by far his best and most personal work. The latter is natural, as Begos not only wrote, directed, shot a large portion and designed the sets, he also stars as our main character Jimmy. And he is suprisingly good and funny. Jimmy does not only look like Rob Zombie, he also swears like a character in a Zombie flick. This may be a new record for F-Bombs and people screaming "WTF?!". The movie is very entertaining, full of references to classic movies (They Live comes to mind) and there's a ton of cartoon like gore. The neon lighting in this film is so well done and gives it a surreal touch. I loved the POV sections, which were inspired by the movie ENTER THE VOID and clearly the video game DOOM. Cult film lovers will smile a lot thanks to Begos' once again referencing stuff directly: a Cannibal Holocaust poster, a beautiful Alex De Renzy neon sign, a Cauldron Films sticker on his laptop and Jimmy is watching a scene from a porno featuring Kay Parker (TABOO). The extras include 3 commentaries, 3 quick 5-minute featurettes and a very lengthy behind the scenes making of. I didn't like the raw, uncut, fly on the wall style of the latter, but the featurettes are cool. One has Begos showing producer Eli Roth around his apartment, where they actually shot this film (on 16mm!). The beautiful slipcover artwork rounds out a fantastic release. Highly recommended"
