Named after Yasujiro Ozu’s custom-made, tatami-level, crab-like tripod, Kani is a new home video label dedicated to leveling the gaze and furthering the understanding of Asian cinema in North America. Focused on genre-defying films, Kani aims to expand the canon, bolster up-and-coming filmmakers and reintroduce repertory classics in context. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

Beloved Hong Kong icon Leslie Cheung (Happy Together) stars as Sing, an ambitious out-of-work filmmaker with two flops to his name. When his producer secures funding for his next project from a freshly cleaned-up Triad financier, he is saddled with the sexy Taipei starlet Mango (Shu Qi). Tasked with being more "Wong Jing than Wong Kar-wai" and encouraged by his long-suffering girlfriend (pop diva Karen Mok), Sing gets to work on his first softcore porno.

Featuring a star-making performance from the stunning Shu Qi (Millenium Mambo) as the production’s stubborn ingénue, alongside her Sex & Zen II co-star Elvis Tsui, Viva Erotica offers an electrifying behind-the-scenes look at the sleazy world of Category III filmmaking in a declining industry. Inspired by the career of Bosco Lam (A Chinese Torture Chamber Story) and Lo Chi-leung’s arduous experiences as an assistant-director-from-hell, the film is replete with tongue-in-cheek references and guest cameos from the likes of Anthony Wong (Ebola Syndrome) and Sean Lau Ching-wan (Running Out Of Time). Viva Erotica is an ode to artistry and perseverance that now stands as one of the defining Hong Kong films of the 1990s.

      Reviews

Absolutely won me over - and great package here!

"Kind of loved this one! Wish there were a few more extras but I like the booklet and interview, plus a commentary for down the line. The slipcover to this is great, and I just noticed there's no standard edition (licensing quirk?), but it almost makes sense because of how integral the scene/shot on the slip is to the film. Great work on this all around, a happy blind-buy."

      Oddballs Unite

"This is a great film about the comraderie of working on a film set. It's pretty funny and has a good heart. Would make a great double feature with Living in Oblivion."

      William G. (5/5)

      Charming

"really charming film with heartfelt performances from Leslie Cheung and Shu Qi in particular. Another excellent release from King Kani"

      Jon B. (5/5)

A Great take on CAT III Film-Making

"This is a pretty great film! The premise is pretty simple: a down-and-out film-maker is brought back into the fold by being convinced to make adult films, and of course in the process, he finds a way to bring in his own style but not without complications along the way. A good balance of humour and drama here, with the folks the director working with all pose their own unique hurdles that unfortunately get in the way of a smooth production. It's a very fun film for those who might've just finished up watching Erotic Ghost Story or Chinese Torture Chamber Story."

      Andrew G. (5/5)

      Love it

"CatIII movie about making a catIII movie. Really glad I picked this one up. It's definitely a keeper."
