Based on horrifying crimes discovered in Snowtown, Australia in 1999, THE SNOWTOWN MURDERS is a stark journey into a brutal subculture of suspicion, addiction and violence. Hoping for much-needed stability and security in their lives, embattled mother Elizabeth (Louise Harris) and her three sons take up with John, the self-appointed moral compass of a vigilante neighborhood watch group. John's charismatic nature causes 16-year-old Jamie (Lucas Pittaway) to view the older man as a role model, and the two quickly strike up a bond. But when John introduces Jamie to his disturbing ideas of administering justice, the impressionable youth is confronted with a father figure who may be the most vicious predator he's encountered yet. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes' Critics Week, Justin Kurzel's directorial debut is an uncompromising look at the alarming circumstances that led to the notorious crimes.

Be Warned
"This is an incredibly powerful film. It is also a deeply disturbing film that deals w/ difficult subject matter. Not just the fact that the story revolves around true events of an actual serial killer in Australia, but the circumstances that led to his arrival add a further grim layer to this account. This film can be a difficult watch at times, but it has stuck in my mind months after viewing. It was expertly directed despite it being a first film for the director. A Neo-Realist-like approach was implemented. Non-actors, for all but the lead character, filmed on location gives the gritty subject matter a realism that honors the true nature of the events. The acting is incredibly good, especially the young man considered to be the co-lead. He was plucked out of a shopping mall and delivers an exceptional performance. I can understand why some might consider this a one time watch. Again, be warned. However, I will definitely be watching this again, not because of the subject matter, but for the skilled film making."

Aussie Serial Killer Thriller
"This gnarly little gem comes packed in a delightful slipcase that disguises the more pedestrian cover art and is packed with excellent special features including a visual essay from Samm Deighan, a commentary from Simon Abrams and booklet with writing from the always delightful Alexandra Heller-Nicholas. There is also a director commentary, deleted scenes and information on the actual crimes. Being a recent film, the transfer is great and I highly recommend this for true crime fans!"
