But his jealous lover (Argento) lurks in the wings–and in the minds of high society’s gossip hounds– still fiercely determined to possess him.

Reviews
Hell Hath No Fury
"The Last Mistress is a lush, slow-burning period drama that leans into passion, obsession, and emotional turmoil. Catherine Breillat brings a bold, sensual style, while Asia Argento delivers a captivating, unpredictable performance. It’s deliberate and a bit indulgent at times, but its intensity and striking visuals make it hard to look away."

A beautifully made lustful take
"A well made movie that took me by surprise just how much I liked it, I think Asia Argento is far better an actress than I remembered."

Good movie, annoying subtitle presentation
"I quite like this historical drama and was glad to watch it again. The special features, particularly the interview with the always interesting and forthcoming Asia Argento is nice. My beef is with how the subtitles are done, instead of simply translating the French to English text, there is often the additional [dog barking] or [man grimaces] on screen. Wore, these would frequently be at the top, with the spoken translation below, so there is a lot of unnecessary clutter. I found it very intrusive, and it would take me out of the movie. Sometimes there is just a symbol of musical notes and it would stay on screen for near a minute, even with no music. There needs to be just subtitle track without the extra statements of what can be seen on screen. See some of the images I attached that show how cluttered the screen is when you get the extra bits up on top in addition to the text translation. It was very sloppily done, imo, and so I only give this 3 stars. It seriously hampered my enjoyment of the movie."

One of the great films of its year
"Thank you for giving us this rush of Asia Argento releases, VS! Keep them coming. The IFC slipcovers have really improved recently, and this one's the best yet! For its star, Asia Argento, The Last Mistress is what The Story of Adele H. is to Isabelle Adjani, The House of Mirth to Gillian Anderson, or what a production of Hedda Gabler is to any worthy actress brave enough to scale that mountain and give themselves over to all those inscrutable contradictions and torments on a different plain of human feeling. In the extras on the new IFC disc from Vinegar Syndrome, Argento talks about wasting this opportunity of a lifetime by not doing the necessary homework, being wasted throughout the shoot and combative with her collaborators—truly the most Asia Argento thing ever, is getting into a naked fist fight with her male co-star in the desert after choking him as their on-screen couple grief fuck in front of the burning funeral pyre of their recently deceased daughter. An indelible scene with a crazy backstory. What Argento sees as a crude performance, is in fact her most mature, thanks in huge part to director Catherine Breillat allowing her lead's fiery, outspoken persona to completely bleed into the character in such a matter of fact fashion, it never becomes an overwhelming, melodramatic force. One reviewer upon the film's theatrical release described Argento's portrayal as feral, yet in the same breath (and almost every other scene), Argento is afforded quiet, reflective, blankly elegant space around her for the audience to simply observe a Spanish courtesan without a shred of shame, living fully in her desire, and what that looks like when she is without the man she in inextricably tied to and consumed by. It's remarkable how both film and performance can be so cruel, devastating and cynically doomed, but express these huge emotions like unremarked upon reflex actions. I've long been a fan, but revisiting Argento's work in this and New Rose Hotel recently, has revealed revelatory depths I previously didn't see or properly appreciate. A fraught but utterly brilliant pairing of filmmaker and actor, one of the very best of the '00s."

Great movie but why the burned in subtitles!?
"This is the umpteenth release I've bought from VinSyn that has burned in subtitles. The subtitles are part of the image onscreen and cannot be turned off. Forget DVD, that is going back to VHS days. There is no excuse for it nowadays. We should have the ability to remove the titles to see the image fully and those who speak the language should be able to enjoy it without the annoyance of subtitles. Hate to dock it any stars for that, but it is pretty annoying. Asia Agento, in her second appearance in this months VinSyn shipment, is great. It's nice to see her getting some of the respect she has been so often denied."

Another masterpiece from the brilliant
"Another masterpiece from the brilliant Catherine Breillat almost on par with Fat Girl. I think ever film of hers I've seen has been a 5 out of 5. Asia Argento is breaking in this unpredictable drama. Great transfer and we get a new interview with Argento and some essays in the way of extras. Great purchase!"
