Six strangers meet at an underground sex club in Japan for a night of anonymous pleasure. While first-timers and regulars collide, each member’s attitude towards sex and satisfaction becomes challenged as their kinks and inhibitions begin to reveal more than they were initially willing to let on.

Adapted from the critically acclaimed play of the same name, LOVE’S WHIRLPOOL explores Japan’s fuzoku (sex industry) with candor, humor and freewheeling indecency. “Stylishly shot and explicit,” Daisuke Miura’s foray into the city’s erotic underbelly provides “great thrills, both erotic and comedic, as well as genuine emotion” (Screen Anarchy).

A film like I've never

"A film like I've never seen before. And I've seen thousands! A lovely slipcover and excellent picture quality."

Daniel F. (5/5)

Stage play turned film still mostly feels like a play

"The contained cast and location make for an ideal subject for a stage play. When adapted, most films try to open it up a bit. Only minimally so here. Feels like a play all the way through and a bit long and slow because of it. Some nudity and sex to liven things up, but ultimately still gets a little dull at times. Good performances and an interesting premise go a long way towards fixing it, but I still would have liked it better with 15 or 20 minutes removed."

Ed K. (5/5)

Introspective examination of sex

"For a film set almost entirely at a sex party, the heart of the story is about what happens between the sex scenes, as gender dynamics and societal notions come into play. Thoughtful and sexy, the only downside is there are few special features."

Marcus P. (5/5)

LOVED Love’s Whirlpool

"The psychology of sex has always been fascinating to me, but particularly when explored through cinema. Every culture has their own rules, taboos, and norms, and I love learning how we’re alike and what separates us. Love’s Whirlpool brings together a group of adults from various backgrounds and walks of life to a club where they can explore their fantasies and desires with strangers. There are some surprisingly tender moments throughout the film and also some rather unrealistic exchanges, but overall it’s a really great film with some humorous and human elements to it. The sex scenes are pretty timid and somewhat sill and awkward but I believe that was the point, and yet it’s still a sexy film that embraces a sex positive message overall. Enjoyable and recommended."

Terry O. (4/5)

Japanese cinema rules

"Love’s Whirlpool by Daisuke Miura feels like a claustrophobic indie play about modern intimacy where everyone’s coolly detached but quietly spiraling. It’s awkward, talky, and kind of brutal in that very specific way that makes you laugh, cringe, and rethink your life choices all at once."

Shane P. (5/5)

Great release

"Really liking this blind buy, one of the better partner releases in recent months. The slipcover is awesome too."

Jakob P. (5/5)

I Love This Whirlpool Of A Movie!

"The slipcover is awesome, as always with anything VS or their awesome partner Labels release! It is a fun, engaging and cool movie that was a lot of fun to watch! I always love the unique VS service of allowing you to stack as many movies as you like in your cart during any release period and shipping them for free! The peerless VS restoration process was on full display with stellar sound and picture! Thank you, VS, for continuing to lovingly restore and release so many wonderful films from every conceivable genre! You are keeping physical media alive in this streaming world we now live in! Highly recommended!"

Who thought an orgy would be so wordy lol

"Im not going to lie this movie was a little slow. It held my interest and overall was enjoyable but its very wordy and it basically all happens in one room. The transfer is great. The features were very interesting."

Takisha P. (5/5)

Challenging Stereotypes

"A movie fully dedicated to challenging societal ideas for better and worse but always interesting."
