Winner of the French Touch prize in the Critics’ Week lineup of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Constance Tsang’s intimate, sensitively observed drama stars frequent Tsai Ming-Liang collaborator Lee Kang-sheng (Rebels Of the Neon God, Stray Dogs), alongside Wu Ke-xi (Nina Wu) and Xu Haixpeng as three Chinese immigrants living in Flushing, Queens — he’s a construction worker, they’re employees of a massage parlor they dream of being able to leave — whose routine lives and relationships are changed forever following a tragic Lunar New Year incident. A tender study of social isolation and messy emotional entanglement, infused with melancholic atmosphere by the standout work of DP Norm Li (The Body Remembers When The World Broke Open, Beyond The Black Rainbow), shooting on film.

Excellent film that is way

"Excellent film that is way about mood more than plot. The ending is truly amazing. The restoration is fantastic and the sound mix really gets you into the film. Reminds me of an early Sean Baker film. Totally recommend."

Realism

"Constance Tsang's first feature is stunning. I found the pacing fine, but it is a heavy film, which deals with loneliness and happiness, trauma and grief. The directing, acting, cinematography, sound and score are very good. Overall, an excellent film, and a solid release,"

Ben. Z. (5/5)

Beautiful Depiction of Loneliness

"This was another blind buy for me and once again I was not disappointed. This movie tells the story of immigrants from Taiwan living in New York who fall in love and then embark on a path where themes of loneliness and despair play a major role. The film is beautifully photographed and well acted. The story kept me interested till the very end. Its ending was very poignant and emotional and very fitting to the story. Overall it was a beautiful movie and well worth a watch."

Christopher K. (5/5)

A drama in Flushing Queens

"Love seeing indie films like this get put on Blu-ray. Shot beautifully. transfer looks great. A slow burn but captures the loneliness one can feel in NY."

Michael L. (5/5)

Very Interesting Film!

"This particular release has a place in all of the films from Asia! It holds its own and is a very engaging watch from the very beginning until the end! I always love the amazing VS service of being able to stack movies and have them ship for free! It is just another of the seemingly endless reasons why they are my favorite Movie Company! The peerless VS restoration process was on full display with stellar sound and picture! Thank you, VS, for continuing to lovingly restore and release so many wonderful films from every conceivable genre! You are keeping physical media alive in this streaming world we now live in! Highly recommended!"

Lonelyness

"Beautiful cinematography, it really captures what it is like to be alone in a big city"

Sean I. (5/5)

Goatanalog

"With releases like this, Dekanalog continues to become one of my favorite labels, they don’t lock themself into a mold, and a lot of the films they release are hard to pin into any one genre, beautiful film, striking visuals, and somber sounds tie it all together."

Bishop M. (5/5)

Beautiful release

"Such an amazing release, wish I was faster to have gotten the slip version but this is an amazing addition to the collection."

tristan w. (5/5)
