Founded in 2002 as one of the first-ever subscription film services with its DVD-of-the-Month Film Club, Film Movement is now a North American distributor of award-winning independent and foreign films based in New York City. In 2015, Film Movement launched the reissue label Film Movement Classics featuring new restorations released theatrically as well as on home video, with an emphasis on films by auteur directors such as Eric Rohmer, Peter Greenaway and Takeshi Kitano.

Based on the bestselling memoirs of French novelist, playwright, and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol (the acclaimed author of Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring), MY FATHER’S GLORY and its sequel MY MOTHER’S CASTLE recount the nostalgic memories of Pagnol’s youth growing up in Provence at the turn of the twentieth century. During one idyllic summer, 11-year-old Marcel (Julien Ciamaca) discovers friendship and wonder amid the rocky peaks surrounding his family’s countryside home while learning new respect for his gentle and caring schoolmaster father Joseph (Philippe Caubère). Upon his return to Marseilles, Marcel longs to escape back to his beloved hills and is granted his wish when his adoring mother Augustine (Nathalie Roussel) devises a plan that allows them to visit the cottage more frequently.

classy pair

"These films, being classy, decent & straightforward, aren't my usual flavor. But because I believe in a varied diet, I gave them a shot. Easy pleasure, bright colors, childhood holidays. The release suits the brightly colored palette of this pair. I like the second story better, but it's not much without the first."

Isaac W. (4/5)

Beautiful Tribute to Pagnol’s World

"This Marcel Pagnol "box set" is another standout release. The presentation and packaging are absolutely top‑tier, with a booklet that adds real depth to the experience. The films themselves look wonderful, with a pleasing grain that preserves the original texture and overall quality of the films I saw so long ago. As always, a Kat Ellinger commentary is a highlight, bringing insight and enthusiasm that enriches the film (Unexpected for this type of film, tbh, but I'll take it!)."

Gregory B. (5/5)

Great French classics

"Excellent duo of films that are absolute classics in France. In North America there used to be an older Blu ray edition in a double feature set, but the image quality looked very poor on modern televisions. Very happy to finally be able to upgrade my old copy, especially with the very elegant slipcover."

Rémi F. (5/5)

Great 2-Film Release

Matthew L. (5/5)

Marcel Pagnol: My Father's Glory, My Mother's Castle

"The Boyhood of 1900s France, but without the abuse. It made me wish I grew up in 1900s southern France pre-WW1, it seemed like a magical time. A wholesome childhood shelled from the horrors that are about to instill onto Europe. The summer and the cinematography only amplifies this feeling. Beautiful restoration and packaging too."

Joshua G. (5/5)
