Richie Bravo, once upon a time a successful Austrian pop star, chases after his faded fame in wintry Rimini, Italy. He funds his dissolute lifestyle and addiction to gambling with concerts for busloads of German-speaking tourists and sexual favors for his female fans. His world starts to collapse when his adult daughter suddenly breaks into his life and demands money from him that she feels he owes her. Meanwhile his elderly father, who suffers from dementia, goes round and round in circles in an Austrian nursing home as his condition steadily declines.

Reviews

boozing, womanizing life of a lounge singer

"A kind of family drama with entertaining, story, characters and performances. The director captures the boozing, womanizing life of a lounge singer in realistic detail. Nifty artwork on slipcover and reversible sleeve"

Kresh R. (3/5)

Bleak, beautiful character study

"A slow, melancholic portrait of a washed-up singer drifting through off-season Europe. It’s all about atmosphere, performance, and small details. The transfer captures the chilly, faded look of the locations perfectly."

Thomas L. (4/5)

A great movie by director Ulrich Seidl

"Perfectly depressing movie about a golden boy who is past his prime, with a wonderful central performance and some tough scenes. Biting and cynical."

Fabrice B. (5/5)

This shit slaps

"I have been in a small time, low rent, podunk garage punk band in Louisiana for the last couple of decades of my adult life. If you think this wouldn’t hit me square in the feels you’d be dead wrong, brother. I like that it came with a CD. Bumping this shit around where they shoot Duck Dynasty feels right somehow."

William D. (5/5)

The Real Hasslehoff

"Of you have any. . and hopefully not. . serious Film froends. . . show them this masterpiece. and lose them as friends forever. Incredable outsider type film. . that is more a docu on everything relevant. The film The Wrestler definitely was inspired. Masterpiece."

Misti I. (5/5)

World cinema is amazing

"Vinegar Syndrome's Blu-ray release of Rimini (2022), directed by Ulrich Seidl, presents a stark, character-driven portrait of Richie Bravo (Michael Thomas), a washed-up Austrian pop star now performing for German-speaking tourists in the off-season of Italy's Rimini. The film delves into themes of faded celebrity, exploitation, and familial estrangement, as Richie navigates his crumbling existence amidst the wintry backdrop of the Adriatic coast. The Blu-ray edition offers a high-definition presentation that captures the film's bleak yet poignant atmosphere, complemented by a CD soundtrack and English subtitles. This release is a must-have for cinephiles interested in contemporary European cinema and character studies"

Thomas H. (5/5)

Washed-Up Pop Star's Melancholy

"Ulrich Seidl’s "Rimini" is a haunting character study of Richie Bravo, a once-famous Austrian pop singer now performing lounge gigs for busloads of tourists in the Italian seaside. He drinks, gambles and sleeps with fans to maintain his faded lifestyle, but when his estranged adult daughter arrives demanding long-overdue support he must face the damage he left behind. Bleak yet mesmerizing, it’s a poignant portrait of aging, regret and the slow collapse of family."

more Seidl

"Great film, great release all around. Here's hoping the entirety of Seidl's varied and incredible catalogue gets upgraded to proper HD soon!"

William M. (5/5)

A great ode to washed up singers everywhere

"Beautiful looking cinematography of the town of Rimini. Time stands still for both the singer and the town even though both have seen better days. Some superb acting really makes this a worthwhile watch."
