An examination of the iconic 1990s indie band Pavement appears to be just another music documentary—until it isn’t. A prismatic hybrid of narrative, scripted, documentary, musical, and metatextual forms, the film intimately shows the band preparing for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while simultaneously tracking the preparations for a musical based on their songs, a museum devoted to their history, and a big-budget Hollywood biopic inspired by their saga as the most important band of a generation.

directed by: Alex Ross Perry

Reviews

Heavy Meta

"One of my favorite bands gets immortalized in an ultra meta off Broadway musical, indie docudrama and museum retrospective to the amusement and befuddlement of their primary songwriter Stephen Malkmus who seemed perplexed by the fanfare and depths to which the director Alex Ross Perry has gone. If you love payment like I do this 4K presentation is a must own. So many great songs and live concert footage. I was at that Fonda reunion show that was a warm-up before primavera sound and it was incredible."

Not your average documentary

"Unique interpretation to a documentary style that I've seen in a while. Fantastic transfer from Utopia!"

Thomas E. (5/5)

Awesome movie

"Alex Ross Perry rocks. Shout out to Tim Heidecker and Griffin Newman aka Downtown Griffy Newmz for their performances in this."

Chris L. (5/5)

Very cool to have this

"Very cool to have this in 4K, and you don’t have to be a superfan of Pavement to appreciate it in any way. And like may music documentaries, I was inspired to listen to more of their music after viewing."

Keith M. (5/5)

Sneaky best release of 2025?

"One to file under "you'd never believe this would get 4k release" Henceforth, the new legacy of Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk is its temporal structure serving as the lightbulb inspiration behind this time-bending, mixed media, parallel universe meta deconstruction/detonation of both the talking heads music doc and the musical biopic. Alex Ross Perry's completely original vision is like nothing you've ever seen before. So much so, you don't even have to be a fan of the alternative/indie rock band it's about to appreciate the form-evolving artistry of editor Robert Greene's intricate and complex pathways of visual and sonic association that create a constant, ever shifting dialogue between disparate story strands—each their own unique prism through which to view the career of these cult slacker musicians. Truly, the heir apparent to Bob Rafelson's Head. Yet to get to the bountiful extras, which read less like supplements and more an expansion of the film itself. An essential disc, for a must-see movie."

Timothy E. (5/5)

Slanted and Disenchanted

"Pavements by Alex Ross Perry is an ambitious, triple-headed monster that tries really hard to maintain the band’s coolness and Malkmus’s disdain for selling out with an earnest look at the band’s preparation for a reunion tour, a winking send-up of the production of a Hollywood biopic and the prep for a jukebox musical. The good news is the music remains unassailable — tho the “broadway” versions test the threshold of cringe. The bad news is the movie lacks the proper narrative thrust to be interesting to anyone but fans. Clocking in at a little over two hours, the film plays more like Wowee Zowee than the lean, fierce power of Slanted and Enchanted. The film avoids getting too in-depth to the songwriting with a surface level Behind The Music story arc padded with the gimmicky tongue-in-cheek movie scenes and musical prep. This meta layering should work, but it’s distracting in that 90’s irony kind of way and there’s a lot of talent on display for what amounts to high school snickering. The archival footage and sundry band ephemera are amazing though. Stuffed with extras, the overall package also impresses, and for good or bad, this film is probably best for curiosity seekers."

Great band

"Great band Shitty direction. Still fun. Buy it!"

Four Different Movies, Rolled Into One

"This movie is awesome! It's got some history, some drama, some comedy, and whole bunch of nonsense that's just a blast. I've always loved the sound of Pavement and this movie feels like their albums do. It's cool to get a glimpse into this legendary band and the different eras of their existence."

Jake B. (5/5)

Not quite a doc

"Whatever you think this movie is going to be, it’s not: I mean it will be that but somehow so much more. Fans of pavement will love it. Fans of Alex Ross Perry (you know who you are) will love it too. The booklet is so fat it’s practically bursting out of the case."

Gabriel Z. (5/5)

Music biopic mashup goodness

"Incredibly enjoyable for the Pavement fans in our household, unsure how this plays to anyone outside that sphere, can't imagine it having a fraction of the impact. ARP has a way of immersing you quickly in his film worlds and the heritage of the band makes that skill work even better in this project."
