In the early Spanish colonial age, the leader of a satanic sect was condemned to eternal damnation by a priest, and was left to rot with an axe forever embedded in his chest. Now, in modern day, a group of teenage, treasure seeking, grave robbers accidentally uncover his hidden tomb, dislodging the axe in the process. But what they don’t realize is that they’ve unwittingly re-woken the diabolical killer, who promptly sets out to complete his unholy mission of spawning the son of Satan, while brutally butchering anyone who happens to get in the way...

Heavily inspired by late 80s slasher films, Ruben Galindo Jr's GRAVE ROBBERS is one of the best forgotten films to come from Mexico’s oft overlooked 80s horror boom. Mexican slasher insanity with a killer supernatural hook 😁

"Grave Robbers is exactly the kind of late-’80s horror discovery I love. You’ve got a satanic killer buried with an axe in his chest, a group of teenagers dumb enough to disturb the tomb, and then the movie just turns into this nasty supernatural slasher with a surprisingly high body count. The killer has a great presence, the deaths are mean and memorable, and I love how the movie mixes occult horror with that Friday the 13th-style stalk-and-kill structure. It feels familiar enough to scratch the slasher itch, but the Mexican setting and satanic mythology give it its own personality. The release is excellent too. Vinegar Syndrome restored it in 4K from the original 35mm camera negative, and the disc includes a Rubén Galindo Jr. interview, commentary from The Hysteria Continues, reversible artwork, and newly translated subtitles. And that Chris Barnes variant slipcover is killer. It was limited to 3,000 copies, and it fits the movie’s dark, supernatural vibe perfectly. Grimy, bloody, fun, and exactly my kind of slasher. Easy 5/5. 😁"

Fun Mexican Slasher

"3. 5 Stars. Mexican Friday the 13th imitator from the director of Cemetery of Terror. It takes over 30 minutes before the killer starts, well, killing people, but once it starts it keeps moving at a fast pace until it reaches the end. In fact, it’s not just the hooded killer, but other cursed supernatural elements as well, which is a fun touch. This is not as good as Cemetery, but a bit better than the director’s other 80s horror film, Don’t Panic."
