'Versions' Note: The Horrible Dr. Hichcock is presented with two unique picture edits, comprising three versions of the film, all on 4K UHD: The original Italian version, with Italian language credits, is offered with both its English and Italian language sound mixes. The alternate U.S. version is presented with its English language mix and original U.S. credit sequence and title card. Historically, there were never any editorial differences between the English language version of the Italian cut and the Italian language version, other than the language of the opening credits themselves. While we are presenting the Italian language credits with both language tracks specifically on the Italian version, the English “Raptus” title sequence card can be found on the Blu-ray bonus features.

Brilliant scientist, Professor Bernard Hichcock, harbors a secret fascination with the corpses of beautiful young women. His perverse desires are so strong that he has developed a unique serum capable of placing people into a death-like state; a drug he has decided to experiment with on his wife, Margaretha. However, after accidentally giving her a lethal dose, the doctor panics and covers up his wife’s death. Hichcock soon remarries, this time to the orphaned Cynthia, whom he brings to live with him at his isolated castle. Shortly after her arrival, Cynthia begins to experience increasingly strange and ghastly goings-on. While her new husband dismisses these seemingly supernatural occurrences, Cynthia becomes convinced that someone - or something - is lurking in the castle and her loving husband might know more than he’s letting on…

A crucial early work in the Italian gothic horror canon, THE HORRIBLE DR. Graced with eye-poppingly colorful cinematography from Raffaele Masciocchi (The Ghost), Vinegar Syndrome proudly presents the UHD debut of this twisted and suspenseful classic in a brand new and exclusive 4K restoration of its original negative, and loaded with fresh extras including interviews with second assistant director Marcello Avallone and star Barbara Steele!

Reviews

The Horrible Dr Hitchcock 4k review

"Very atmospheric gothic chiller. Definitely has a hammer vibe and Barbara Steele looking gorgeous as ever. Amazing packaging."

James K. (5/5)

An Italian gothic treasure.

"Fantastic release. Slipcase, slipcover and transfer are all terrifically done. Nice amount of extras. A fine release from VS."

Alexander U. (5/5)

Sick but still kinda stately

"Sick but still kinda stately italian shocker given the treatment it deserves. This is a critical film in the development of Italian cult cinema, and this edition is more than comprehensive, pairing well with Severin's release of Freda's follow up, The Ghost."

Steven K. (5/5)

Has a great, spooky vibe

"Has a great, spooky vibe to it. Very much a film of its time with beautiful sets and wardrobe. Wonderful boxset and artwork."

Edward l. (4/5)

The no good doctor

"For some reason, Riccardo Freda's films seem to age slightly worse than Mario Bava's. This perverse variation on Jane Eyre—complete with necrophilia!—achieves incredible levels of atmosphere and visual delirium, even if the plot doesn't quite make sense. Excellent interviews with Avallone and Gastaldi."

Ruy I. (5/5)

The Horrible Dr. Hichcock

"Nice artwork and awesome movie!"

Patrick J. (5/5)

Great atmospheric beautiful movie

"This was a blind by for me. I'm a huge Mario Bava fan and this movie felt very much like a Bava movie. Stunning 4K transfer. Highly recommended!"

Bill P. (5/5)

A beautiful 4K release

"Beautiful photography and location, with an oppressive Gothic ambiance. A movie in the vein of The Old Dark House."

Fabrice B. (5/5)

Great film, but with minor blemishes

"I received my copy of "The Horrible Dr. Hichcock" (special edition) a few days ago and the film is excellent, although unfortunately my booklet had some kind of a minor defect along the bottom edge where it looks like some kind of glue was stuck to it. Otherwise it's incredibly beautiful and I still think it was well worth the money."

Tanaya F. (4/5)

Queen of Gothic Horror

"Excellent 4K transfer, limited edition packaging is fire, Barbara Steele is beautiful. Highly recommended!"
