A group of monkeys, including a director loosely inspired by Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider persona, struggle through various trials and tribulations while making an epic adventure film in this psychedelic and satirical look at the Hollywood counterculture of the early ’70s. Directed by celebrated animator Gerald Potterton – who earned multiple Oscar nominations for his work at the National Film Board of Canada, contributed to Yellow Submarine, and later directed Heavy Metal – this is an outrageous and inspired feat of cinematic imagination.

An unlikely hybrid of analogue animation and live action Soviet fantasy film, Tiki Tiki repurposes extended passages from Rolan Bykov’s eye-popping 1967 phantasmagoria Aybolit-66 as the film within the film, employing irreverent comic dubbing and cutting to subvert the original intent. The result puzzled and thrilled ’70s audiences in equal measure and turned heads by winning Mosfilm art director Aleksandr Kuznetsov a Canadian Film Award. An unapologetically eccentric experience that has earned comparisons to H.C. Potter’s Hellzapoppin', Tiki Tiki remains one of the most sought-after animated enigmas of its era.

"Its a simple but weird movie about a group of apes making a movie using human actors, affecting the "set" of the film with their weather-changing movie-making machine. Its an animation/live action hybrid movie where they riff on an old soviet movie. Its not for everyone, but i thought it was pretty funny. I didnt know what was going on with the live action stuff, really, but I liked the animated segments, and the dynamic between the director and the nervous financial guy. The ending is really funny. Would recommend. The book is also pretty cool too"

Beautiful restoration!

"I had not even heard of this movie before it was posted on the VS site. The whole thing is a real oddity, in the audience nether-zone between children and adults. The animated segments look amazing - bright primaries, spacious compositions, just really distinct. The live-action portions leave a bit to be desired - unengaging (if well shot) with some sub-MST3K jokes that only a father in law could love. Nothing really makes a lick of sense. Incredible that such effort could be put into a stoney lark like this. Packed to the gills with extras, always appreciated! Would love to see more Canadian animation releases from CIP!"

"Compellingly captures the post-60s, pre-Watergate pop culture zeitgeist of America despite being an unlikely hybrid of Canadian and Russian elements and creators. The visuals alone are worth the price of admission, especially if you love the style of '70s psychedelic animation. CIP always delivers with their expansive collection of extras & a nice encode. Recommended if you like moving drawings & general wackiness."

Animated Counterculture Oddity

"Tiki Tiki is wonderfully hard to classify, which is the appeal. Gerald Potterton turns monkeys making an adventure film into a psychedelic, satirical trip through early 70s counterculture, then folds in live-action Soviet fantasy footage from Aybolit-66 with comic dubbing and strange repurposing. You can feel the Heavy Metal and Yellow Submarine-adjacent animation world around it, but it has its own baffling rhythm. The 4K restoration from the original 35mm A/B negatives makes this Canadian animated enigma feel like a proper rediscovery rather than a footnote."

Incredible and odd film

"The participation of Jean Shepard was enough reason to pick this up for me. His distinctive voice is great for animation. (Incidentally there were several TV movies of continuing story of Ralphie and family that should get picked up for decent home release by somebody). The animation is gorgeous and the truly odd Russian movie that is cut into it makes for a truly indescribable film. Apparently they were torn on how to market this. Aim it at kids or stoned teenagers. I'd have gone with stoned teenagers. Good double feature with Yellow Submarine. Kid friendly except for a little near the end when King Kong arrives carrying a naked woman (animated but fully visible breasts). Recommended."

"Hey guys, you did an incredible job on the restoration, you always do. Thank you for your hard work, but next time you do these "limited edition slip covers," maybe make it some interesting original art and not just the same cover as the box. I wasted 20 extra bucks thinking it was going to be something special and it was a nothing burger."

Some Real Monkey Business

"I don't doubt that more than a few people thought that the reckless, often substance-driven New Hollywood moviemaking was some monkey business. Why not make it literal with this charming satire? Honestly, if distribution for this movie was better, it would be rightfully more admired than Woody Allen's similar remixing experiments. No comedy at the expense of race, just good self-reflexive fun with a cool style reminiscent of Yellow Submarine, which director Gerald Potterton recently worked on. Having cartoon monkeys be in charge of this in-universe project adds to the chaotic nature of the form, King Kong being the king of movies too perfect of an overarching gag in and of itself. The parodied movie, Aybolit-66, seems like a fun romp as well, an early sequence involving the Mosfilm logo as a physical space suggesting its own zany quality. Should track that down one of these days."
