In order to survive on the rough streets of Hamburg, 18-year-old Willi gets by with small-time racketeering. After an arrest, the authorities decide to send him to a reformatory, but he escapes from police custody and falls into the clutches of a pimp who sends him to the gay sex trade. At the same time, Willi meets a journalist, who draws him into hopeless re-socialization projects, primarily to improve his own life. When Willi falls in love with a girl who seems to be even worse off than he is, he sets his mind on freeing her from her dreariness and running away with her. But the accumulated problems are so great that his past catches up with him in a dramatic way...

German New Wave

"Supermarkt, directed by Roland Klick, is a gritty, stylish portrait of urban drift and youthful aimlessness in 1970s Hamburg. The film follows a small‑time delinquent trying to navigate a world that offers him little more than dead ends, and Klick captures that struggle with a mix of documentary realism and sharp, expressive visual flair. What makes Supermarkt stand out is its mood: neon‑washed nights, cramped apartments, and a sense of restless energy that feels both raw and poetic. The lead performance by Charly Wierczejewski gives the film a wounded, unpredictable center, and Klick’s direction balances tough social observation with moments of surprising tenderness. It’s a striking piece of German New Wave cinema—lean, atmospheric, and quietly devastating in its depiction of a young man slipping through society’s cracks."

A Gritty Urban Discovery, Beautifully Preserved

"Supermarkt feels like a true discovery — a raw, street-level snapshot of 1970s Germany that hits with immediacy and attitude. It plays like a time capsule of youth culture and urban unrest, powered by restless energy and a documentary-like edge. If you enjoy uncovering overlooked European crime films, this one lands hard and stays with you. The restoration is handled with real sensitivity. Vinegar Syndrome cleans up the image while respecting the film’s rough texture and natural grain, letting the cityscapes and interiors retain their lived-in grit. Colors are stable, contrast is improved, and the film’s mood comes through stronger without feeling sanitized. The transfer is a clear upgrade over prior releases. Detail is sharper, motion is smooth, and the overall presentation finally matches the film’s intensity. It’s the kind of transfer that makes you feel like you’re seeing the movie properly for the first time. For collectors who love deep-cut European cinema, Supermarkt is an essential pickup — a compelling discovery, a careful restoration, and a strong transfer that bring this underrated crime drama back to life."
