Fed up with waitressing, Jade Cochran (Claire Brennen) embarks on a new life with a traveling carnival. But she discovers that what lurks behind the curtain doesn’t take too kindly to her backstabbing plans. A gutter-noir reworking Tod Browning’s FREAKS and a valentine to the carnival lifestyle that defined the career of producer David F. Friedman (BLOOD FEAST), SHE FREAK is a snapshot of life, love, and revenge on the grounds of a seedy carnival in Smalltown, USA -- complete with crackpot monster make-up effects from Harry Thomas (PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE). Like Devo’s music and Ed Wood’s novels, SHE FREAK creates a synthetic reality that is often preferable to our own. A Little Bit of Carnival Sleaze
"She Freak is cheap, sleazy, and not particularly subtle, but I found myself enjoying its grubby carnival world. It clearly owes an enormous debt to Freaks, without ever coming close to what makes that film so special, but there is still something fascinating about watching this particular piece of 60s exploitation unfold. The real attraction for me is all the carnival atmosphere and the feeling that you are getting a glimpse of a world that simply doesn't exist anymore. It is rough and occasionally rather dull, but as an exploitation time capsule I think it has plenty of charm. Another very fitting bit of cinematic archaeology from AGFA."

Much tamer than expected, but a beautiful restoration
"A fun pseudo-documentary about 1960s carnies, but a bit disappointing as an exploitation picture. "She Freak" is a nearly bloodless, sexless morality play about a small-town girl gone greedy, and the lurid title and eye-popping poster only pay off in the final 30 seconds. But the Vinegar Syndrome presentation is still worth the price of admission--in addition to the fantastic restoration job, you get a commentary from Drew Friedman, the self professed "Hitchcock of the crotchies," who tells great stories about this flick, his other exploitation films, carnivals, and infamously misplaced cadavers. The compilation of Friedman's many other grindhouse trailers is a feature attraction all its own. I do wish I'd gotten the slipcover, but the reversible artwork with the wild original poster art is still pretty great."

Dave Friedman’s Labour of Love
"A film that has really grown on me (and the sumptuous look of this transfer makes it even better). Don’t go in expecting a horror film. Instead, take it on its own terms — a melodrama that doubles as a love letter to (and document of) carnival life, and with a satisfyingly grotesque punchline. The commentary track alone is worth the price of admission. Dave Friedman is a superb raconteur, and his knowledge of carnival history is encyclopaedic."
