This listing is for the standard edition Blu-ray. The limited edition slipcover (designed by Chester Brown) was limited to 500 units and is sold out. The two versions are identical, aside from the slipcover.

Founded in 2002 as one of the first-ever subscription film services with its DVD-of-the-Month Film Club, Film Movement is now a North American distributor of award-winning independent and foreign films based in New York City. In 2015, Film Movement launched the reissue label Film Movement Classics featuring new restorations released theatrically as well as on home video, with an emphasis on films by auteur directors such as Eric Rohmer, Peter Greenaway and Takeshi Kitano.

Chester, a cartoonist, and Sonny, a TV host - are a long-term, committed romantic couple. When Sonny introduces the idea of opening up their relationship, Chester begins sleeping with sex workers, forcing him to face his issues with intimacy and romance in the process.

Based on the best-selling graphic novel by acclaimed alternative-cartoonist Chester Brown, Paying For It is a “provocative, hilarious and heartfelt” (The Globe and Mail) personal take on romance and relationships. From writer/director Sook-Yin Lee, the film “displays a maturity and thoughtfulness (...) in the messy contradictions we may hold about love” (RogerEbert.com).

Touching

"This adaptation of Paying For It works well. The direction, acting, script, and pacing are all great. I wasn't incredibly set on the story at first, but it grew on me, and everything came together quite nicely. I'm stoked to have been able to pick up one of the awesome slipcovers, too."

Quirky

"Paying for It by Sook-Yin Lee is a thoughtful and surprisingly honest film that approaches relationships, intimacy, and personal freedom with a lot more nuance than most movies tackling similar themes. The performances and direction keep it grounded and human throughout, making it one of the more interesting and emotionally mature indie dramas in recent years."

Wonderful Non Romantic Love Affair

"Bought this after listening to the conversation in the trailer. Chester Browns modern view on love felt interesting. Performances are great and there´s nothing judgemental. A gem!"

Decent watch but not for everyone

"I'm always impressed when people make movies about themselves and they come off badly. It shows either a supremely high or supremely low self awareness. Either way it's usually interesting. Chester especially comes off superficial, self centered, lazy, disconnected and joylessly dull. Sonny, flighty, whiny, afraid to be alone, and attracted to obvious dimwits and a-holes is comparatively great. The only romantic relationship in the entire movie that seems good is one we don't see, only hear about. I suppose an argument could be made for the friendship being the most important, but we don't get much of an image of it either. We get a statement at the end that they're still best friends, but it's hard to imagine why based on the movie. Not a favorite but certainly interesting enough to check out."

PAYING FOR IT

"Paying for It is an unusually intimate indie drama that feels less interested in shock value than in honestly exploring loneliness, sex, and emotional connection. Director Sook-Yin Lee adapts Paying for It with a grounded, awkward realism that makes the characters feel painfully human rather than provocative caricatures. The film’s quiet tone and deadpan humor won’t work for everyone, but its willingness to examine nontraditional relationships without moralizing gives it a strangely tender core. Dan Beirne and Emily Lê both deliver understated performances that keep the story emotionally believable, even when the subject matter gets uncomfortable. It’s not a flashy movie, but if you like thoughtful character-driven indie films, this one sticks with you afterward."

Great release!

"When an introverted cartoonist's girlfriend wants to redefine their relationship, he begins sleeping with sex workers and discovers a new kind of intimacy in the process. An adaptation of the Graphic Novel by Chester Brown."
