In the 1970s, X-Men was on the brink of cancellation, but Marvel decided to give the title one more shot. Young writer Chris Claremont was tasked with writing a new team of international X-Men. Five years later, it was the biggest title in comics, and Claremont one of comics’ biggest stars.

This film tells the story of Chris and his small team of collaborators, who worked together to tell stories that inspired a generation of comics readers, and led directly to the creation of the blockbuster X-Men film franchise.

The story of his groundbreaking seventeen year run on the title is also the story of a company in transition, of how Marvel moved from the free thinking “house of ideas” to a top down corporation, and how the success of the X-Men took away the very freedom that allowed Chris to create.

The X-Men is a modern mythology, and this is the story of its creation, in the words of the people who made it happen.

Decent

"It's pretty short and doesn't go into a tonne of depth, mostly being fairly recent recollections. I got this as an xmas gift for my son who's very interested in creating comics and he enjoyed it a lot."

An in-depth documentary that’s well worth a watch

"This in-depth documentary looks at the influence one artist had on one of Marvel’s biggest properties. From hero’s to villians and every creature in between, audience are given a look into this important time in the comic’s history."

An all-access pass to the School for Gifted Youngsters.

"For a thing that has had such an indelible and deep impact on popular culture, there is still a long stretch of its origins that you really had to be there for - and this documentary will really resonate for those that took the ride as it was unfolding. It can certainly be appreciated by those who late to the game (or late to the planet, you can't help when you were born, of course), and it's a great piece of insider history for those interested in comics in general, but for an X-Men fanatic who hit the convenience store spinner racks in the 1970s and '80s, this is a must-watch. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Claremont, Ann Nocenti, and Louise Simonson - a fantastic perspective on the behind-the-scenes goings-on as the legend was being built."

Paul A. (5/5)

Good doc for the X-Men comic fans

"I read the classic Claremont & Byrne run in the 80s and have reread it since many times so this documentary was made for me. Only negative thing is that it should have been longer."

I Found It X-Quisite

"I don't know why this documentary is hitting me so hard tonight, but I think therein is the magic of The X-Men. This documentary tells the story of comic writer/visionary Chris Claremont who had the X-Men put in his hands in the 70s and would go on to have a 17 year run in charge of the comic franchise making them the #1 comic in the world and changing the way mainstream comics were written. Having grown up an X-Men fan (this doc made me look up the first issue I ever purchased, 1992's X-Men Classic's issue #76 'Altar-Cations' itself a reprint of Claremont's Uncanny X-Men issue 172 from August 1983) who loved the cartoon, the toys, the trading cards, the video game and later the movies, the team has always has a place in my heart. The opposition to prejudice and feeling of an outsider looking for a place to belong helped shape so much of my world view and make sense of it. That's probably why seeing this documentary and realizing the how and why of these elements being in the X-Men and subsequently my own DNA is so profoundly striking to me. Having met Mr Claremont in 2023, the documentary captures his essence perfectly. He has a certain way of speaking, a certain aura and it's all here. Plus having great talking heads and perspectives from his contemporaries as well as the knowledgeable creators and readers he's influenced, it's a powerful testament to exactly what one man's impact has been. I'm not sure how this will play to the X-Man absolute fanatics who may already know all this, or to those for whom this might be their first taste of what X-Men is, but for the sweet spot in the middle it's pretty perfect. Recommended."
