Reviews

I Highly Recommend Blackberry

"This movie is phenomenal and shows that director Matt Johnson can capture drama. I recently rewatched this film for the second time overall, and it is definitely worth picking up. It has good bits of humor, but the real winner here is the gripping drama. The movie does has a bit of a slow burn to start, but it gets you invested in this small startup company, Robotics In Motion. Once they get their foothold in the telecommunications market space, things take off and the pace starts running, as we see the rise and fall of the Blackberry phone. I unfortunately missed out on the slipcover, but the standard edition still has a nice booklet with a fairly lengthy essay about Blackberry the phone, Blackberry the movie, and director Matt Johnson. I can't recommend this movie enough for fans of biographical films."

A solid, if misleading, film presented with a good selection of extras

"BlackBerry is a solid movie that explores similar territory to The Social Network, detailing the destruction of relationships and personal integrity as a nerdy college dropout makes it big, with a few key differences that differentiate it from its more famous kin. Also like The Social Network, it presents a heavily fictionalized version of history, to the point of almost being an original story - note the scare quotes around "true story" in the trailer. I wasn’t quite as blown away by this movie as a lot of viewers and critics were, but it is a good film that reveals a few important truths about money and finance. I appreciate the inclusion of both the theatrical and the miniseries cuts, and the discs contain a solid collection of special features, including . I also got a booklet with my copy, which I wasn’t expecting, since the slipcover edition had already sold out. Overall, this edition earns a solid recommendation from me."

Matt Johnson does it again

"A funny and witty film that does a genuinely excellent job at depicting the rapidly evolving culture of this period. The inclusion of the extended miniseries is amazing and really helps provide a more fleshed out version of the film that I highly reccommend. An amazing biopic which should be the new standard for the genre!"

Elijah K. (5/5)

Matt Johnson rules

"Matt Johnson's best film of the decade. In my opinion, the humor and it. Also the extended cut that was exclusive to AMC is amazing. I love the comedy in this one. I love the slipcover on this release. I can only hope they do a release of operation avalanche eventually."

A Funny and Fascinating Tech Rise and Fall

"BlackBerry is a sharp, fast-moving dramatization of the rise and collapse of the company that transformed mobile communication. Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton are excellent, with Howerton's explosive performance giving the movie some of its funniest and most uncomfortable moments. The film deliberately looks rougher than a typical corporate drama. The handheld camerawork and grainy picture give it an almost documentary-like quality that fits the chaotic startup culture and helps distinguish it visually from more polished tech biopics. The supplemental features are a welcome addition, especially for a film based on such a fascinating period in technology history. They add context to the real people and events that inspired the story and make the physical release feel more complete. Overall, BlackBerry is funny, tense, and surprisingly compelling, even if you already know how the story ends."

Lucky Snag

"Wonderful to be able to own the miniseries as part of the blu ray. This is a very specific type of dry comedy. Very interesting subject. The design of the cover is a clever. With the stark white and blue blueprint."

Matt Johnson clicks

"Who knew a movie about making a product could be so fun. I saw BlackBerry before I knew about Nirvanna TheBand The Show. . . So I at first I was a little taken out by him in this movie. But after I saw NirvannaTBTS The Movie (5⭐), I went back and got into the series and now come full circle to really appreciating his Canadian sensibilities. This Blu-ray package is loaded with extras including 3 commentaries and 2 cuts of the movie and lots of BTS features. Well with the price of admission here."

Steven A. (5/5)

Matt Johnson Delivers Again

"BlackBerry is a fast-paced, sharply written look at the rise and fall of one of tech’s most influential companies. Glenn Howerton steals the show with a high-strung, explosive performance that adds real energy to the story. It’s both funny and a little tragic, capturing how quickly innovation can spiral when ambition and ego take over."
