In late nineteenth-century Paris, strange things are happening at the Opera House. Legends abound of a mysterious phantom who, raised from infancy by rats, inhabits the subterranean caverns deep beneath the famous building, occasionally emerging above ground to wreak bloody havoc. Enchanted by the voice of the beautiful Christine Daaé, an understudy in the upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet, the phantom quickly brings the singer under his spell, setting himself on a collision course with her would-be suitor, Raoul. As the gala performance of Romeo and Juliet draws near, and Christine falls ever deeper under his influence, the phantom hatches a diabolical plan to secure his young protégeé the starring role - and claim her as his, once and for all.
Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel of the same, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA sees Italian horror maestro Dario Argento (Suspiria, Deep Red) turn his masterful directorial hand to a period piece, whilst still injecting proceedings with all the expected visual flair and gruesome gore. Featuring lead performances from Asia Argento (The Stendhal Syndrome) and Julian Sands (Warlock, Boxing Helena) as the titular villain, alongside expert cinematography from veteran DP Ronnie Taylor (Gandhi) and a lush, orchestral score from Ennio Morricone (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to raise the curtain on Argento’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, newly restored in 4K from its original negative and loaded with a bewitching array of new and archival bonus features.

Reviews
Argento takes on The Phantom!
"Dario Argento takes on one of the great classic horror characters with his version of "The Phantom of the Opera". It's not perfect, but if you're a fan of Argento's work, you'll find enjoyment in a lot of what's going on here. And we get Julian Sands as The Phantom, and Asia Argento as his love interest!"

Loved it!
"Every review ive seen said this was awful and for collectors only. Hard disagree. Excellent gore and so many goofy moments nade this a su0er fun watch!"
— Stephen J. (5/5)
Subpar Argento
"I’d love to give this five stars, but based on Argento standards, this just doesn’t cut it. Some garish looking CG and the rat-catching scene…wow… It has its moments, though. Julian Sands and a Morricone score are highlights."
— Matthew M. (4/5)
Phantom of the Opera
"sigh. I mean what can I say. We all saw that. We’ve probably all seen Suspiria and Deep Red. Why did this happen the way it did. I mean it has some good, the opera house and some shots are gorgeous, I just feel like Argento is trying to be goofy and self-aware but for his films it almost never works. The CGI was unnecessary and godawful. Julian and Asia are…. fine? Minus the obviously fake opera singing. Great packaging and art from Vinegar Syndrome as always though!"
— Spenser Y. (4/5)
Fits great next to Stendhal & Sleepless!
"I'm glad to see the later Argento releases getting the VS treatment they deserve. Definitely not his best work but glad to upgrade from the old Scorpion Blu-ray version. Details are rich and sharp. My Argento 4K collection is almost complete. Now if we could only get Inferno in UHD all my dreams will have come true. Too bad Asia doesn't appear in any new bonus features or interviews. RIP Julian Sands!"
— Jason R. (5/5)
As bad as they say
"Woof. . . . I heard this was bad but this was so much worse than I expected. It's for sure the worst Argento flick"
— Dakota F. (1/5)
Good film
"The upgraded restoration is great! And the artwork is great as well!"
— Missael L. (5/5)
Argento's underrated ouvre
"Amazing edition for a film that's already in need of reevaluation."
— Juan E. (5/5)
"Medusa will always lead you to my kingdom. "
"A truly bizarre, hilarious, schizophrenic, and sexually charged adaptation. It feels like Argento is channeling Gilliam and Jeunet & Caro here. Overall, one of Dario's weaker films, filled with some pretty goofy imagery and poor CGI, though the cinematography is nice and honestly its more gonzo elements are part of its charm. The Phantom Of The Opera (1998) has other enjoyable aspects as well—including the lead performances by Julian Sands and Asia Argento, fun gore gags, and a good Ennio Morricone score."
— Daniel S. (3/5)
