Thad Beaumont is tired of writing trashy pulp novels under the pseudonym “George Stark” in order to make a living. Yearning to focus solely on scribing the intellectually stimulating literature he enjoys, Thad decides to - literally - bury his alter ego in a figurative attempt to finally break free of lucrative lowbrow temptations. However, George isn’t prepared to be laid to rest and miraculously resurrects himself out of Thad’s subconscious, fully transforming into a flesh-and-blood double and going on a grisly murder spree straight out of one of his own novels. With the police convinced that Thad is behind the series of bizarre killings, he is forced to confront his inner demons and determine where the real Thad ends and the “real” George begins in an attempt to put an end to George Stark’s rampage.

Based on the thrilling novel by Stephen King (Carrie, The Shining) and directed by horror legend George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead), THE DARK HALF is a tense examination of the violent and destructive nature of the creative process. Starring Academy Award® winner Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People), Academy Award® nominee Amy Madigan (Twice in a Lifetime, Field of Dreams), and Academy Award© nominee Julie Harris (The Member of the Wedding, The Haunting), Vinegar Syndrome is proud to bring THE DARK HALF to 4K UHD, in a brand new cinematographer-approved restoration of its 35mm camera negative and featuring a comprehensive selection of new and archival extras, including never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage and interviews.

More George Romero and Stephen King Greatness

"An excellent psychological thriller with Gothic trappings, The Dark Half is perhaps something of an overlooked entry in the filmography of George Romero. The story is compelling, there's a strong sense of atmosphere, and the cast - headed by Timothy Hutton, Amy Madigan and Michael Rooker - is simply superb. I thought I was happy with the SF edition, but this tops it, with gorgeous packaging and an outstanding new transfer. An essential purchase."

Kyle S. (5/5)

Thrilling

"One of the best King book adaptions. A really good movie. The story was very thrilling till the perfect conclusion."

Mathias S. (4/5)

Better than I remembered

"Was very curious to return to this one after having not seen it since its orig release. . . I remembered it being not scary enough for my taste back in the day, but now I see it as a different type of film. Its almost like a late era supernatural giallo. The complete lack of an explanation for how the supernatural aspects work also is refreshing. . . far too many horror films try to spell it all out."

Brian M. (4/5)

These separated twins are not compatible!

"I personally consider this a good adaptation of a Stephen King book. Timothy Hutton does well in both roles and a young Michael Rooker graces us as sheriff Alan Pangborn. Not to mention this was directed by horror savant George f***ing Romero! Great stuff. This 4K UHD release looks amazing. Kudos Vinegar Syndrome for releasing this!"

Nathan R. (5/5)

The Dark Half - Vinegar Syndrome LE release

"I love these early 90s horror movies so this one was a blind buy for me but I am very excited to dig into it. The plot sounds right up my alley and the cast seems pretty good. Will be watching come October"

Colin M. (5/5)

A Fall-tastic film!

"This is one of those amazing fall atmosphere. Stephen King movies and you can enjoy just purely on that basis. If you want, but it has so many layers to enjoy and rediscover with every watch. Admittedly, might not be your favorite movie on the first watch."

Edward S. (5/5)

Don't Sleep on the Dark half

"Criminally underrated Stephen King/George Romero collaboration that gets me everytime. And did I mention this is. thriller with oscar winner Amy Madigan as our resident final girl. Plus oscar winner Timothy Hutton killing it in dual roles. The Transfer looks amazing. I was so happy VS put this one out"

Ryan S. (5/5)

Safe Romero

"Well-made, even though it doesn't do any of that great Romero stuff. The best parts come in the final act."

Viktor A. (4/5)

What a release!

"Really underrated Stephen King adaption. VS put together an incredible package"

Arthur C. (5/5)

Great Romero adaptation of a Stephen King novel

"I’ve always liked this film, and I’m glad it has now come to 4K. Timothy Hutton does great in the dual roles, and the film has great direction from George Romero along with excellent effects."
