Taking its name from the Lumière Brothers invention of the same name, Cinématographe is a new sub-label from Vinegar Syndrome that seeks to fill gaps in the canon of American cinema. Offering a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s, Cinématographe will explore the wide breadth of American moviemaking, spanning numerous genres and scales of production. Curated and produced by Vinegar Syndrome's Justin LaLiberty, each limited edition release will be housed in a specially designed, cloth-bound, media book with embossed foil titles and custom molded disc trays accompanied by a slipcase featuring newly commissioned art and an individually numbered J-card.

Angela de Marco (Michelle Pfeiffer, Scarface) is married to Frank “Cucumber” de Marco (Alec Baldwin, Miami Blues), who is murdered for having an affair with the mistress of mob boss Tony “The Tiger” Russo (Dean Stockwell, Blue Velvet). Following Frank’s sudden departure, Angela trades her Long Island environs for New York City, catching the eye of Tony, and the FBI, in the process. As Angela begins a casual tryst with undercover FBI agent Mike Downey (Matthew Modine, Full Metal Jacket), the case against Tony continues to mount, resulting in a bullet-ridden climax.

Directed by Jonathan Demme (Swimming to Cambodia) and based on an original screenplay by Barry Strugatz and Mark R. Burns (She-Devil), Married to the Mob is a deft, often very funny, marriage of crime conventions and romantic comedy. Featuring many Demme collaborators on the crew—including cinematographer Tak Fujimoto (The Silence of the Lambs), editor Craig McKay (Philadelphia), production designer Kristi Zea (Beloved) and a score by David Byrne, of Talking Heads—alongside an incredible supporting cast that includes the likes of Mercedes Ruehl (The Warriors), Oliver Platt (The Ice Harvest), Paul Lazar (Philadelphia) and Joan Cusack (Broadcast News), Married to the Mob is a rousing display of eclectic talent in American moviemaking of the 1980s. Cinématographe is proud to present the definitive edition of Jonathan Demme’s genre-bending masterpiece, in a new 4K restoration, marking its world UHD debut.

There's No Going Back: The Life and Work of Jonathan Demme - Hardcover Book

By David M. Stewart

Jonathan Demme, one of the most influential and dynamic directors of the twentieth century, was a fearless and radical filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer―a compassionate artist, advocate, and humanist who was compelled to tell the stories of marginalized communities. His intense passion and appreciation of music, culture, and art were interwoven throughout his life and extraordinary body of work.

There's No Going Back is the first complete biography of an auteur whose remarkable and versatile career encompassed acclaimed narratives, documentaries, and films spanning nearly five decades. Best known for Melvin and Howard (1980), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993), and Beloved (1998), Demme was an Oscar-winning filmmaker with a recognizable style and voice. He often used that voice to champion women's rights and amplify social and environmental justice issues. Demme was also well regarded for the loyalty, devotion, and collegiality shown to the actors, camera crew, and technical staff he employed in his projects.

Cinephile and journalist David M. Stewart affirms that Demme was more than just a quirky filmmaker or a product of 1970s New Hollywood; he was ceaseless and earnest in his approach to capturing humanity in all its complexities. Drawing from interviews with Demme's collaborators and colleagues, Stewart presents the many facets of the filmmaker's life as seen through the eyes of those who were in his warm, eclectic orbit. There's No Going Back is a compelling and fitting tribute to the brilliance and breadth of the man behind the camera.

Reviews

Demme devotee

"I became a fan of Jonathan Demme after seeing Stop Making Sense in theaters back when I was in high school. His next film I saw was Something Wild that I absolutely loved, amazing soundtrack and fabulous cast. I was not as enamored with Married To The Mob when it was first released, but I picked up this beautiful edition from cinémaographe for nostalgia sake. They did a terrific restoration into 4k and now 38 years later after original release I have a better appreciation of the screwball nature of the movie, especially Mercedes Ruhl's performance. I'm a fan of The Big Picture podcast, so I'm excited to listen to Sean Fennessey's commentary on next watch"

Early Demme

"Married to the Mob is a sharp, stylish comedy that pokes fun at mob culture with a playful, satirical edge. Jonathan Demme brings a colorful, offbeat energy, while Michelle Pfeiffer shines with a funny and charismatic performance. It’s a breezy, entertaining watch that balances humor and crime elements really well."

Married to the Mob 4k

"Married to the Mob is a classic 80's movie that never loses it's shine! Good plot, funny, great actors! The packaging and limited edition slipcase is the icing on the cake! Once again great job Vinegar Syndrome and keep up the great work!"

One of Jonathan Demme’s best

"One of Jonathan Demme’s best comedies. With a stellar cast that includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Matthew Modine, Alec Baldwin, Mercedes Ruhle, Dean Stockwell, Oliver Platt, and Nancy Travis, coupled with an absolute banger of a soundtrack, this is a fun movie! The extras included made this a great upgrade from my previous BluRay purchase from a few years back."

Douglas A. (5/5)

Married again? You bet!

"This movie is so under appreciated. When I heard VS was doing a 4K release, it was an insta-buy. I’m glad VS worked so hard to release such a beautiful edition—both of the restoration and the product design. A great addition for any collector of physical media!"

Cody F. (5/5)

Essential Genre Twist

"A cartoonish mafia send-up that doubles as a sweet romantic comedy (with some crime thrills and novel consumerism critique thrown in for good measure). Sometimes you can have it all."

Andrew M. (5/5)

Demme God

"A mob movie that's not about men and it's fantastic. Michelle Pfeiffer is great and so is the rest of the stacked cast."

Patrick D. (5/5)

Married to the Mob is

"Married to the Mob is a stylish crime-comedy directed by Jonathan Demme that blends mob satire with sharp character work and a distinctly ‘80s visual flair. The film follows a widow trying to escape her late husband’s ties to organized crime, only to find herself pulled back into that world in unexpected ways. With standout performances from Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Modine, along with a memorable supporting turn by Dean Stockwell, it balances humor, romance, and crime elements while showcasing Demme’s knack for vibrant characters and offbeat storytelling. The 4K Ultra HD release from Cinematographe presents the film with a strong visual upgrade, bringing out the bold colors, textures, and production design that define its look. The restoration highlights the film’s lively cinematography while maintaining its original feel, and the release is typically packaged with collector-focused presentation elements. While extras may vary, the emphasis is on delivering a high-quality transfer that finally does justice to the film’s unique aesthetic, making it a welcome edition for fans and collectors alike."

We work for the President of the United States of America

"This movie is a ton of fun. I previously only really knew Jonathan Demme for Silence of the Lambs, but between A24's release of Stop Making Sense and Cinématographe releasing a couple of his films, I have gained a whole new appreciation for his work. The tone here is a bit crazy, but it plays into the crazy world of the film. I love seeing Pfeiffer in a comedic role and Dean Stockton as a total scumbag. The David Byrne score fits into this mad world as well as anything else does. It's crazy and fun and I loved it. The only thing I really dock points for is that the ending just got really strange and felt off. Not thw whole ending just the immediate last 2 shots. . . like what? But a small complaint. Also, Charles Napier as a flamboyant hairstylist is something I never knew I needed and now I don't know how I ever lived without it."

Derrick A. (5/5)

STRONG, INDEPENDENT WOMAN!!!

"Jonathan Demme is missed. And as his movies get better presentations over the years this only becomes more apparent. Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Modine shine in a crime comedy of epic proportions. There’s romance, there's goofy italians, there's David Byrne music, but above all there's Angela. She takes no shits, shits on others and strutsi on with wisdom, grace, bravern and resolute conviction. I love this movie so much."
