The first feature film directed entirely by Italian horror legend Lamberto Bava (A Blade in the Dark, Demons), the giallo-tinged, true-crime-inspired MACABRE (Macabro) offers a tense and grisly study of budding madness. Starring Bernice Stegers (Fellini’s City of Women, Xtro) in a riveting performance utilizing the haunting beauty of New Orleans, and featuring a screenplay co-authored by Bava along with the great Pupi and Antonio Avati (The House With Laughing Windows, Zeder), this unnerving thriller at last hits 4K UHD from Vinegar Syndrome in a brand new, absolutely gorgeous restoration of its totally uncensored original camera negative, along with a heaping assortment of fresh interviews and critical appraisals.

"Wonderful 4K package! The transfer is a nice upgrade from the blu-ray. The artwork is great (maybe besides the front cover on the slipcase), informative extras, and solid essays in the included booklet. Recommend picking this one up!"

Lamberto Bava's Debut!
"This new 4k of Lamberto Bava's debut directorial effort is worth every penny and the wait! The new transfer looks immaculate and VS has adorned it with an abundance of supplements, housed in their customary sturdy slipcase, along with a nicely appointed booklet! Everything fans of this odd and gruesome giallo could ask for!"
— Steven M. (5/5)
Lamberto my beloved
"This movie has a reputation for being very slow. And it was but at no point was I bored, there’s two characters here who are so bizarre and psychotic. It’s not one of my favorite Lamberto Bava movies but it’s still pretty good"
— Gustavo M. (5/5)
Lamberto For The Win
"This movie is like a freight train heading down the tracks. It heads exactly where you think it will, but it doesn't nullify the sleazy ride. The release looks great, and it's just another Lamberto Bava film that I'm glad to have in my collection."
— Nathan L. (5/5)
Southern Gothic Madness Pristinely Preserved
"Another superb restoration from the label! The Dolby Vision transfer offers incredible colour depth, really showing off the film's late-70s aesthetic and the sweaty, atmospheric New Orleans locations. More than just a shocking cult curiosity, the film serves as a grotesque metaphor for the ultimate refusal to let go, transforming grief into a literal, physical prison of the mind."
— Ben H. (5/5)
Macabre
"I’m always appreciative when a movie like this gets this kind of release. Presented in 4K with incredible packaging with an essay book included. Stoked for this release."
— Ant D. (5/5)
This one was a-head of it's time
"I've been a long time fan of Lamberto Bava and yet had never seen this one before so when VS announced it's 4K arrival I was beyond thrilled! Well worth the wait. It's a glorious presentation and restoration of a Bava classic! Thank you VS!"
— Jason R. (5/5)
Macabre is nasty!
"They REALLY go for it in this one. A crappy mother bails on taking her kids to the movies so she can see her side "D". Many bad and ill tempered things happen. It's a weird movie and I loved it!"
— Nolan L. (5/5)
VS Macabre me but this, but I am happy for it
"First time watch, got it for the HBF perks. But this release looks astonishing. From what I was eyeing and what I searched online this restoration was heavily needed"
— John R. (5/5)
4 Roses for Jane
"This is a fantastic restoration of a delectable slice of southern gothic from Lamberto Bava. This is such a gleefully gruesome movie. Great location shooting and well appointed sets really stand out in 4K. The cast is delightful, especially Veronica Zinny in a very complicated role for a child actor. I last saw this in VHS quality years ago, and the VS presentation has increased my appreciation for it quite a bit."
